  • Description
From one of the greatest minds in contemporary mathematics, Professor E.T. Bell, comes a witty, accessible, and fascinating look at the beautiful craft and enthralling history of mathematics. Men of Mathematics provides a rich account of major mathematical milestones, from the geometry of the Greeks through Newton's calculus, and on to the laws of probability, symbolic logic, and the fourth dimension. Bell breaks down this majestic history of ideas into a series of engrossing biographies of the great mathematicians who made progress possible--and who also led intriguing, complicated, and often surprisingly entertaining lives. Never pedantic or dense, Bell writes with clarity and simplicity to distill great mathematical concepts into their most understandable forms for the curious everyday reader. Anyone with an interest in math may learn from these rich lessons, an advanced degree or extensive research is never necessary.

    first opinion

Has ignored the contributions of Indian mathematicians, highlighting only their much later European counterparts. But an interesting book, as we will come to know about the history of mathematics and the story of mathematicians who have contributed to it.

    Classic

This book shows its age (the first edition coming out in about 1920s), so it doesn't actually cover the lives of the mathematicians of the 20th century; the most modern are Poincare and Cantor. The title is true to its word, there aren't any women portrayed. Sophie Germain, Emmy Noether would've probably made good additions to the book.

This book isn't just another admiration-filled work, E T Bell does not idolize the characters, and portrays them with all their flaws and as well as their br...

Brilliantly written book and awesome service by flpkart

I ordered the book on September 1st and received on 2nd without the one day delivery offer. I must say I'm really impressed. Moreover I got flipkart student discount of 500 above a purchase of 750 and this book actually costed me Rs.150.

Now getting to the book, very well written account of mathematicians since 300 BC starting from Zeno, Pythagoras et al. I haven't completed it but enjoying it right now. Must buy for people who have even slight interest in mathematics. Not much insight of m...

Later discovered that this book have errors

It was looking good book to me initially but later I read over the internet that few claims in the book are just fake. Reader can have it for overall idea but authenticity is questionable as there are not endnotes or referencing in the book.
