Lithium Battery - Powering Through Everyday

What would we do if did not have our cell phones? We use our smart phone for almost everything from paying bills to searching for locations. A few years ago, cell phones were bulky and seldom used often. But these are a must have today. Cell phone in the past batteries did not last long. Modern cell phones are powered by the technology of the old two-way radios os the 1940s used in taxis and police cars. In 1964, the Swedish Police Department used the very first cell phone. This phone was good for 6 calls before the battery died and it worked on the principles of radio transmissions. Most early cell phones required a large amount of battery power and were hence used only in vehicles as the battery hooked to the phone was actually a car battery. The lithium batteries used today were a distant dream back them.

Lithium-ion batteries have become common in home electronics these days. They are one of the most popular types of rechargeable batteries for portable electronics.

History of Lithium-ion Batteries

When cell phones evolved in the 1980s, they began to become popular and slightly more practical. But they were still used in cars due to the battery requirement of earlier models. During the 1990s, cell phone batteries got smaller and the networks to run them improved drastically. The core component of Lithium-ion batteries was developed in 1980 by Goodenough, a physicist. His brainchild was the cobalt-oxide cathode, which is the nervous system of every lithium-ion battery. Every portable electronic device today contain’s Goodenough’s cathode.

Lithium Batteries are thinner, stronger and last for a longer period of time. It also takes less time to charge them. They are made into different shapes and sizes to be compatible with a variety of cell phones. These rechargeable lithium batteries are safe for the environment. But lithium batteries are a lot more expensive than the older battery models.

Lithium Polymer Battery Uses :

Most types of digital cameras use a 3V lithium battery or a single-use one. Since lithium batteries have a long life, they are ideal for being used in emergency flashlights.

The lithium technology powers small electronics like laptops, and phones and has become very common in these applications. Lithium batteries charge at nearly 100% efficiency. These are also much more cost-effective at storing power and are also more efficient at low temperatures. 12V lithium batteries are also used in cars and bikes.

Though non-rechargeable batteries are less expensive than rechargeable ones, rechargeable lithium batteries are environment friendly and last for a longer time. The other major benefit of lithium batteries is that they do not require maintenance to ensure performance. Since there are different types of lithium-ion cell available which means that the right technology can be used for specific applications. Some forms of lithium-ion batteries provide a high current density and are pretty good for mobile electronic equipment. The rest of the batteries provide higher current levels and are ideal for power tools and electric vehicles.

Buying Lithium Batteries Online

There are many advantages of buying these online as you can read through about the brand and figure out what fits your need the best. Brands like Micromax, Lenovo, Lava, XOLO, Karbonn and Gionee have many types of lithium batteries.

High energy density: The much greater energy density is one of the chief advantages of a lithium ion battery or cell. With electronic equipment such as mobile phones needing to operate longer between charges while still consuming more power, there is always a need to batteries with a much higher energy density. In addition to this, there are many power applications from power tools to electric vehicles. The much higher power density offered by lithium ion batteries is a distinct advantage.

Self-discharge: One issue with batteries and ells is that they lose their charge over time. This self-discharge can be a major issue. One advantage of lithium ion cells is that their rate of self-discharge is much lower than that of other rechargeable cells such as Ni-Cad and NiMH forms.

No requirement for priming: Some rechargeable cells need to be primed when they receive their first charge. There is no requirement for this with lithium ion cells and batteries.

Low maintenance: One major lithium ion battery advantage is that they do not require and maintenance to ensure their performance. Ni-Cad cells required a periodic discharge to ensure that they did not exhibit the memory effect. As this does not affect lithium ion cells, this process or other similar maintenance procedures are not required.

Variety of types available: There are several types of lithium ion cell available. This advantage of lithium ion batteries can mean that the right technology can be used for the particular application needed. Some forms of lithium ion battery provide a high current density and are ideal for consumer mobile electronic equipment. Others are able to provide much higher current levels and are ideal for power tools and electric vehicles.
