Description
MODERN ART and Other Essays is one of the masterpieces in which he has put his life-long engagement and experience with many facets of Art. This he has accomplished with the authenticity of a maestro, in a language that would be intelligible even to the lay readers who have some interest in this discipline. His write-up on Modern Art breaks fresh ground such as not so far accessed by any professional worldwide, to reveal its genesis, its pioneers, practoitioners, and protagonists in the universal context of its evolution and unique achievements in Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. His essay on Art Criticism is similarly an eye-opener underscoring as it does the indispensability of practical knowledge in its development and practice so as to enrich the perception and appreciation of as much the artist as the aesthetician and impassioned viewer. His forays into Computer Art have led to new insights not yet seen in the writings of scholars. These he shares with palpable excirtement with the prospective readers of his book.

Author Info
  • Dr SS Bhatti has the rare distinction of being the only architect in the country to have served as the official Art Critic of The Tribune, a leading English newspaper in north-western India. During his 20-year-long tenure (1977-1997), he published over 400 reviews of art exhibitions at district, state, regional, national, and international levels, notably, one on the sculptures of 20th-century’s greatest sculptor, Henry Moore, and the mega-size watercolour paintings of Chinese masters. Belonging to a family of Punjabi artists, artisans, craftsmen, and architects, he inherited his passion for all forms of art—and assiduously honed his talent throughout his life developing four interrelated areas responsible for the creation of knowledge: Theory, Practice, Research, and Pedagogy.
