In my professional experience as a Civil Engineer for the Government of India – a role which I performed for 31 years – I too experienced my share of ups and downs. I learned many lessons, but early on, I had trouble holding on to those lessons or applying them to my daily life. In order to keep my mind engaged without stress, I began reading many books. But there was no rhyme or logic to my reading. Then, one day, I came across an article in a magazine that suggested reading only positive books. The author of the article reasoned that reading which doesn’t benefit the reader is a waste of time. This simple truth transformed my reading habit from that day onward, and I focused my attention as a reader only on positive and meaningful books. Reading became my passion and then my habit, and I found myself changing from a somewhat disorganized and confused young man to one who was learning and gathering wisdom every day – not just from books, but from the people and experiences around me.
