    Description
In her powerful, poignant book - one of the best non-fiction works from India in recent years - Anubha Bhonsle examines the tangled and tragic history of Manipur, and of much of India's North East. Through the story of Irom Sharmila - on a protest fast since 2000 - and many others who have fallen victim to violence or despair or stood up to fight for peace and justice, she shows us an entire society ravaged by insurgency and counter insurgency operations, corruption and ethnic rivalries. Drawing upon extensive interviews with personnel of the Indian army and intelligence agencies, politicians and bureaucrats, leaders of insurgent groups, Irom Sharmila and her family and ordinary people across Manipur, Anubha Bhonsle has produced a compelling and necessary book on the North East, the Indian state, identity politics and the enormous human cost of conflict.

    Boots and bruised feet

Anubha Bhonsle’s book ‘Mother. Where’s my country?’ begins with a lacerating description of a rape survivor’s memories. The survivor, herself isn’t sure about how to narrate what she went through – uses several props to thread her experience together, because really how does one explain the trauma, the betrayal, the intense violation in just a matter of few words? This first page is symptomatic of pretty much how the book goes. AFSPA became a part of our pop political vocabulary following the...

    The Real View

A recent meeting organised by a group of students and civilians from the state of Kashmir led to one of the strongest, most infamous and violent protest the country had ever seen. These were just students from the state of Kashmir who wanted to talk to people about the problems and difficulties they face on their own state and hometown. What should have been a peaceful exchange of ideas and opinions soon led to a clash between ideologies and diversities.

    A definitive book on Manipur

As rightly put by many others this is a necessary book. ?It tells you that Manipur is much more than what is splashed across on media and even our books in schools.? This is a compelling book and its strong, able report-like narration makes it a unputdownable read.

    Gory and horrific

I'll rate the book 4.5/5 stars
Yes, that is the kind of life people in the north eastern states of India are living thanks to government negligence and militant groups. This book talks about Irom Sharmila and her fight for the rights of the people. Her fight is with AFSPA, other militant groups and Indian army. A must read, especially now.

    a soul hitting book.

After Independence, things have been anything but peaceful for the North Eastern part of India. So much, that the people of north east feel neglected by their own country. the definition of normal life in Manipur is far different from ours. People in Manipur live under threat of Armed forces special powers act(AFSPA).

Mother, where’s my country? is your guide to know about Manipur, Irom Sharmila, her protest/hunger strike against the AFSPA in detail. Anubha Bhonsle interviewed close to 200 pe...

A book not to be missed

Apart from having a great writing style, this book is also a must-read for the information that it provides. It takes you on a roller-coaster ride of Manipur. The narrative mostly revolves around the 'iron lady of Manipur', Irom Sharmila. This, however, does not affect the book approaching the main problem of AFSPA that people face in Manipur. While reading, one also feels the need of having more books like these. You will also realise how the mainstream media has ignored the North East.

A compelling read on The North East

The very affable TV anchor and the champion of Citizen Journalist, Anubha makes this book a compelling read with graphic imagery of what Manipur is all about. That the tyranny of distance has been shortened in this book is a very great attempt in bringing the stories from Manipur to the masses or even take them to the TV studios because of the way it has been written.

The imagery presented in this book is not just the lush green forest cover but uncovers the militant and the govt, the life a...
