Summary of the Book

Mrityunjaya is the autobiography of Karna in which the author provides a deep exploration of Karna’s life, who is often reduced to an antagonist in most modern renditions of the Mahabharata. This book is a study of humanity, life and existentialism through the Mahabharata. This book contains six dramatic soliloquies to form nine parts. Four of these depict Karna's point of view, mixed with the viewpoints of Kunti, Duryodhana, Shatruntapa, Vrishali and Krishna. The author depicts a mysterious similarity between Krishna and Karna, trying to change the reader’s perspective of Karna’s sins.

About Shivaji Sawant

Shivaji Sawant is an Indian writer. He has also written Chhava, Yugandhar and Muktigaatha Mahamanavachya among other popular Marathi books. He was the first Marathi writer to be awarded the prestigious Moortidevi Award in 1994.

Shivaji Sawant (August 31, 1940 September 18, 2002) was an acclaimed Indian writer in Marathi. He was born in a small farmer family of Aajra village in Kolhapur district. He worked with Rajaram Prashala, Kolhapur as a teacher for 20 years and afterwords as editor with Maharashtra education department's monthly magazine Lokshikshan for six years in Pune (1974 1980). After extensive research he wrote a book Mrityunjay (English: Triumph Over Death) based on Karna, one of the leading characters of the epic Mahabharat. This book was translated in Hindi (1974), English (1989), Kannada (1990), Gujarati (1991), Malayalam (1995) and received numerous awards and accolades. In 1980 he wrote a book Chhava based on Sambhaji's life. He held the post of the vice-president of Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad since 1995. He was president of Baroda Sahitya Sammelan in 1983. Mr. Shivaji Sawant died of massive cardiac arrest in Goa while on the campaign tour for President of 76th 'All India Marathi Sahitya Sammelan'. He was one of the three contestants contesting for the post of President, the other two were Subhash Bhende from Mumbai and Jawahar Mutha from Aurangabad.

Worth the money

I'm happy with the Book but the reason I'm giving four stars is the printing of the book is not upto to the mark but still we can buy this book around 300-400 rupees. But it's not worth more than that! And it's must read marathi novel. The story of karna is amazing!

One of the beautiful novel by Shivaji Savant one of the fantastic author in Marathi literature. MRUTYUNJAY is a tragic novel based on the life of great warrior Karna. I heard about this novel very much but when I gone through it, it was superb another novel by S.S. Yugandhar (full Mahabharat) is fantastic. If you get the chance to read above novels then just go through it one time.

Great book, bad print

Unfortunately, the book print quality is not so great. The paper is thin. In some places, the text is blurred. (You may say, it is of good quality for a pirated version).

Having said that, this is one of the best books that I have ever read! (Still reading it). Everyday, I rush back to this book. I wait impatiently till I can get back to it.

How a man should live, think. I guess in the original Mahabharata, these intricacies of Karna's mind are not given. But Shivaji Savant brings Karna's c...
