This book has been written after two decades of research and gives the readers a comparative history of environmentalism in India and the United States.

    Summary of the Book

India and the United States are ecologically and culturally diverse democracies that have different histories when it comes to the preservation of their environment. Ramachandra Guha, the author of this book, talks about the environmental philosophies in these two countries: agrarianism in India and wilderness thinking in the United States. The book provides a social ecology framework that is a step above these ideologies. He comes down to a richer understanding of controversies concerning large dams, state forests and wildlife reserves. He has criticized the supporters of conservation who fight for the conservation of biospheres that care for humans and other species. He has also packed in the profiles of three impressive environmental thinkers and activists: Lewis Mumford, Chandi Prasad Bhatt, and Madhav Gadgil. In the end, the author has asked readers how much they think they should consume.
