    Scholarly and beautifully written

    This is an amazing book. With a lot of research, it recounts Mumbai's history with beautiful prose. At times, it reads like a thriller. You get an account of different stories told over time about Mumbai and what lies behind them. It covers the city's history from the time of the Portuguese conquest, through British Raj, and up to the present. Occasionally it is tough going, but stick with it!
