  • Description
After the critical and commercial success of Delhi Noir, part of New York's award-winning noir series, comes Mumbai Noir, which looks through a glass darkly at what is arguably India's most fascinating city. The stories in Mumbai Noir depict the many ways in which the city's ever-present shadowy aspects often force themselves onto the lives of ordinary people. The city's chroniclers-ts novelists, essayists, poets, journalists, and filmmakers-often seem overawed by the idea of Mumbai, rendering its quotidian realities in brushstrokes of grandiose narratives. What inoculates the stories in this collection from the hyperbole of "maximum city"-that much-abused term coined by the astute Suketu Mehta to describe Mumbai-are the restraints set by the noir genre, which stipulates, among other things, an unflinching gaze at the underbelly, without recourse to sentimentality or forced denouements. When viewed from a plane (or hot-air balloon), any metropolis might strike one as jaw-dropping. For a majority of Mumbai's residents, however, the city's overcrowded public transportation and decaying infrastructure fail to provide even the minimum of relief ...

    Good one

Some of the stories were really good, especially that of twin brothers. But there were far too many stories of eunuchs and prostitutes which were without any real stories. At most those were a glimpse at their lives.

    Non- Satisfactory....Complete uphappy

Leaving 2 to 3 stories all stories revolves around sex, Eunuch etc. there are many thing that could be explored. Many stories end abruptly. Mumbai has many things to say... Completely unhappy with the book and from the renowned author.

    Fantastic!

The book is amazing. There are some 12 short stories and i have read them all. Altough the story ends abruptly which is the main reason why you would wanna read the last paragraph again. I think its fantastic how they come up with such an story and end it so well, you are stuck in that story for sometime unless u read the next one. Its not necessary that you need to know how every story ends. I think Altaf has done an excellent job. This book do deserves and award.

Are you serious the author won an award for his previous work?

The book stories are highly bizarre stories with disappointing and vague endings. I have read 9 of the 14 stories in the book, the only reason why I continue to read the book is to find some "Award Winner" matter.

The stories that I have read are fairly novice in nature. For me this book is complete waste of time (exact reason why I write my review before anyone else makes the same mistake).
