Description

My Family and Other Animals authored by renowned naturalist Gerald Durrell, is an autobiographical work in which he writes about his childhood and adventures on the Greek island of Corfu between 1935 and 1939.

Summary of the Book

My Family and Other Animals describes the life of the Durrell family on the island in an extremely amusing manner, and also richly discusses the fauna of the island. This is the first and most famous book of the Durrell's Corfu trilogy. When the unconventional and atypical Durrell family can no longer bare the damp and depressing English climate, they plan to relocate to the sunny and serene Greek island of Corfu. This book was an attempt to present to the readers how Gerald Durrell and his family embraced the natural history of the island but ended being a humorous and delightful account of the family’s experience with the wildlife on the island. The author writes about his personal experiences and the ceaseless procession of puppies, toads, varieties of exotic insects, octopuses, bats, and butterflies into their home. This book will make for a very interesting and delightful read for young readers.

Wish this was my childhood

An absolutely delightful book, descriptive, funny, worth reading again and again and again. Every time you read it, it will be as funny as the first time and one can find tiny nuances and jokes which you might have missed in earlier readings. You will go through a gamut of emotions, you will smile, chuckle, laugh till your cheeks and your stomach aches and also you will be touched by this story. You may start wishing that your childhood was just as funny and adventurous as the authors.

Book review- My family and other animals

A must for all animal lovers. The author has done a splendid job in narrating it from the perspective of a young boy. The description is very crisp and realistic. The metaphoric usage makes the reading experience a lot of fun. I myself ended up learning so many new things about the plant and animal life. The book stalls mid-way for the slight monotony but the Family, their actions, beliefs and way of life does not fail to amuse and surprise the readers at any point. The author has conceived s...

Naturalistic's book... surprisingly with great portion humorous entertainment
This is the first time I read this book. Wow... I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Definitely made me to look for his other works.... Even my 4 year old son asks me what Gerry did today.
This book is all about series of happening in Gerry's household, so i don't have to read it completely or in-sequence to my son. Just pick any chapter and enjoy it together.
A must read for young ones.
