My Family and Other Animals authored by renowned naturalist Gerald Durrell, is an autobiographical work in which he writes about his childhood and adventures on the Greek island of Corfu between 1935 and 1939.
Summary of the Book
My Family and Other Animals describes the life of the Durrell family on the island in an extremely amusing manner, and also richly discusses the fauna of the island. This is the first and most famous book of the Durrell's Corfu trilogy. When the unconventional and atypical Durrell family can no longer bare the damp and depressing English climate, they plan to relocate to the sunny and serene Greek island of Corfu. This book was an attempt to present to the readers how Gerald Durrell and his family embraced the natural history of the island but ended being a humorous and delightful account of the family’s experience with the wildlife on the island. The author writes about his personal experiences and the ceaseless procession of puppies, toads, varieties of exotic insects, octopuses, bats, and butterflies into their home. This book will make for a very interesting and delightful read for young readers.
