  • Description
Nationalism has been authored by Rabindranath Tagore (7th May 1861 - 7th August 1941) He was a poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer. He is well known by his creation - 'Gitanjali'. After this he became the first Indian to win the Nobel prize in literature. Nationalism is an essay, in which Tagore has narrated that the actual problem in our country is related to our society ie Social, not a political problem. Even is exists all over the world. The book consists of Nationalism in India and other countries as well. Basically we can grab two objects from our Social Institution ie One is to regalate our passions and appetites for the development of harmony amongst human and the other one is to help him in cultivating love for his fellow creatures. That is why Society is the expression of moral and spiritual aspirations. We lack in good health and our liberty is not a real freedom. Today even our Society is being involved in casteism. Here everyone is hunger of power in political arena. The author has described well that basically we are facing lots of Social problems rather political or other. Residing the concepts of Freedom Voyage says that we hanent got freedom of our souls. In the world over, the countrie are foussing into commercialization and under but we are fixed up in many unless concepts So our aim should be to grow up socially, workon social conforms then any own definition of Nationalism. Politically, as such ment a big isue but Socially lots of refarms are required. Tagore himself suffered from disillusionment. However he retained his faith in humanity. He considead that the power of self-sacrifice and the moral faculty of sympathy are the guiding sprite of Social vitality.

    • Rabindranath Tagore, (born May 7, 1861, Calcutta (Now Kolkata), India-died August 7, 1941, Calcutta), Bengali poet, short-story writer, song composer, playwright, essayist, and painter who introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was highly influential in introducing Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of early 20th-century India. In 1913 he became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. The son of the religious reformer Debendranath Tagore, he early began to write verses, and, after incomplete studies in England in the late 1870s, he returned to India. There he published several books of poetry in the 1880s and completed Manasi (1890), a collection that marks the maturing of his genius. It contains some of his best-known poems, including many in verse forms new to Bengali, as well as some social and political satire that was critical of his fellow Bengalis. In 1891 Tagore went to East Bengal (now in Bangladesh) to manage his family's estates at Shilaidah and Shazadpur for 10 years. There he often stayed in a houseboat on the Padma River (the main channel of the Ganges River), in close contact with village folk, and his sympathy for them became the keynote of much of his later writing. Most of his finest short stories, which examine “humble lives and their small miseries,” date from the 1890s and have a poignancy, laced with gentle irony, that is unique to him (though admirably captured by the director Satyajit Ray in later film adaptations). Tagore came to love the Bengali countryside, most of all the Padma River, an often-repeated image in his verse. During these years he published several poetry collections, notably Sonar Tari (1894; The Golden Boat), and plays, notably Chitrangada (1892; Chitra). Tagore's poems are virtually untranslatable, as are his more than 2,000 songs, which achieved considerable popularity among all classes of Bengali society.

    Tagore on Nationalism

Tagore's essay on nationalism explores the nature of nationalism that prevailed during his time.He critically comments on how Indians are blindly aping the west without modifying their ideologies to suit the particular Indian circumstances. He also indicates the innate condescension in the west's perspective of the east. A classic is defined by its ability to transcend the subjectivity of its own time and acquire a universal characteristic. This essay is a classic as it is relevant in today'...

    Tagore's Nationalism

Tagore's essay engages with the idea of nationalism from an oriental perspective. He is of the opinion that the Orient's blind imitation of the west is not the answer for India's national struggle. The Indian or Oriental struggle for independence must have an indigenous inspiration. Ideas must be examined and modified to suit particular situations. Tagore sees nationalism as the awakening of a national consciousness and character rather than just the adhesive for the integration of a divided ...
