Not Just an Accountant: The Diary of the Nation’s Conscience Keeper is the autobiography of India’s eleventh comptroller and auditor general and the man who is regarded as the symbol of the anti-corruption movement, Vinod Rai.

    Summary of the Book

This autobiography offers a rich-in-anecdote narrative and inside information as Rai talks about the major scams that shocked the entire nation. It discusses the procedural inconsistencies in the issuance of licenses for second generation spectrum allotment, the last-minute quick-fixes in the conduct of the XIX commonwealth games, the loss of national resources during the allocation of coal blocks, the violation of systems and the clear display of familiar capitalism in the exploration of hydrocarbon and the sad story of civil aviation in India. Rai not only exposes government’s failures and controversies, but also delves into the mandate of the CAG as an ardent watchdog. Also, he focusses on long-term solutions to corruption in the country. He talks about the urgent need for ethics - the pursuit of excellence, accountability, probity and transparency within the governments, the bureaucracy, corporate enterprises, and even public life.

    About Vinod Rai

Vinod Rai has served as the comptroller and auditor general of India. He has been revered for bringing about a paradigm change in the areas. The systems and qualitative upgrades that he introduced have been highly commended and endorsed within the country and globally, bringing worldwide compliment to the institution of the CAG of India. Rai also has vast experiences in the civil services and has served more than three decades in different capacities at the regional and federal level. He has also left an enduring mark on the financial sector of the nation. Rai currently lives in New Delhi.

Its Awakening moment to all Indians. Mr. Vinod Rai you are awesome.

Its a book for "the" one who wants to put India first. For a trailer of this book one should watch Arnab's newshour debate which went on air on 11-Sep-2014. Simply Superb. It cannot be rated no iota less than 5. I am a Chartered Accountant and this book excited me like anything. One should be strong enough to be bold like Vinod Rai. He is to be called "the Auditor". Jai Hind.

    Government's Auditor!

Couple of books came around the same time this book was released in the 1st half of 2014 written by Indian bureaucrats. This one by Vinod Rai, the Comptroller and Auditor General is by far the best on the role of the CAG as envisioned by the constitution as one of India's towering institutions versus the elected executive towards providing an effective, efficient & an accountable Governance system.

He has picked up a bunch of case studies in detail from where he sat & his team conducted the ...

Regarding the book, it provides an account of the different scams that shook the trust of the common man in the govt during the last decade. It not only shows how the scams could have been prevented as there are conscientious civil servants as well who provided adequate warnings. Similarly the book also attempts at defending the role...

An account of Mr. Vinod's Rai's professional work which is worth the time invested.

Very few books have an amazing foreword and preface; and this book is one of them. It keeps you glued to the narrative because of the lucid yet simple language yet high profile assignments which Mr. Rai has handled during his tenure. Must read for everyone who wishes to unravel the real truth behind the mentioned scams.

Flipkart thank you for a super express delivery within 24 hrs of my placing of the order!

Indeed He is "Not Just an Accountant"

He is most certainly 'Not Just An Accountant' and he has proved to be 'The Nation's Conscience Keeper'. The author comes across as an upright bureaucrat with wide ranging experience. I am not surprised he was a thorn in the path of corrupt politicians. This book should interest readers who want more than a glimpse of the machinations of government and how, even in the corrupt environment of governance that exists today, an upright officer can stand his ground and not be browbeaten. Mr. Vinod ...

An account that's not to be missed!

Having seen CAG (just the abbreviation) in a lot news articles ranging from the Commonwealth games 2010 scam to the coal block allocation case, this book ‘Not Just an Accountant’ by Vinod Rai gave a wonderful insight for me into what the office of the CAG actually does. By explaining the duties and tasks of the CAG in common man’s lingo, Mr. Rai sure makes the premise of the book easy to digest in terms of vocabulary. However, the same cannot be said about the premise. For an upper middle-cla...

Revelations not to weaken but to strengthen (the government) in a long run.

Through this book the author tries to explain the functioning of the government how a constitutional body is respected and the minister- bureaucrat. Throws light on the legislative enquires and various parliamentary bodies. Revolves totally around the upper echelons of power (executive & bureaucracy). Books makes us to feel that it is the counsel of the author trying to justify what all he did (however as far as i am concerned he was under his mandate). Throws the picture of the implications ...
