'A most perceptive and eye-opening account of everyday life in North Korea' Jung ChangNorth Korea is Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four made reality: it is the only country in the world not connected to the internet; where Gone with the Wind is a dangerous, banned book; and where during political rallies, spies study your expression to check your sincerity. A great dive into the deeper prospects of North Korea

Nothing to Envy: Ordinary lives in North Korea" is a narrative non-fiction work written by Barbara Demick, a Los Angeles Times journalist. It follows closely the lives of six ordinary North Koreans, weaving their stories to bring to us an excellent account of how life is in this communist nation.

Children in North Korea are taught to sing "We have nothing to Envy in the World". As ironic as it seems, also the title of this book, life inside North Korea is a deep secret to rest of the world a...

    Eye Opener

An eye-opener of a book, the author has tried to construct a picture of North Korean society from various interviews with former residents of the country, and is perhaps one of the few quality volumes on the topic, and is very well-researched.

Very intriguing read, the stories of incredible repression, fear, resilience and tragedy in the real-life 1984 come as a shock and fill in the gaps about life in North Korea, spanning a few decades. Does help put in perspective what few news reports ab...

    The real 1984!

The classic '1984' by George Orwell, describes an imaginary future where every aspect of people's life is controlled by a dictatorial regime.
North korea under the Kim dynasty is an exact replica of what Orwell wrote in his book. A nightmare where you are supposed to rever the Great leader unconditionally and sacrifice everything for the sake of your dear leader.
This book describes the stories of real people from North Korea who defected to South Korea. Their stories detail about how every a...

A superb account of the world's biggest prison

This is a beautiful and poignant look at the humanity that still endures amidst the deprivations and delusions of a psychopathic regime. A tremendous achievement at unveiling the curtain from one of the most peculiar and Orwellian dictatorships in the world.

    The hermit kingdom!

I read Nothing to Envy right after reading 'A Year in Pyongyang - North Korea' by Andrew Holloway which was written in late 1980's by a British communist who stayed in North Korea before the Berlin Wall had fallen down and USSR had disintegrated. He speaks about a utterly closed, paranoid, maniacal North Korea but yet where people had enough food to go by and adequate health infrastructure compared to most third world countries.

How just 6-7 years can make a world of difference to a country?

    Everyone must read this!

A very shocking and frank second-person account of life under the most authoritarian, brutal, and repressive regime in the world.

North Koreans have none of the many personal liberties that we take for granted. The communist party bans private business of any sort, reading foreign newspapers or books, listening to foreign radio stations, uttering a single word against the ideology of the party or mocking president Kim-il Seung among other things. The slightest transgression can result in eit...
