Doniger's book of books

One should read this book after he has finished author's magnificent earlier volume "The Hindus: An Alternative History" (Penguin), which chronicled the 3000 years of Hindu tradition. This excellent collection of thematically arranged connected essays has the same scholarly depth. The topics range from nature of Hinduism and Hindu attitudes to gender, to desire and the control of desire in Hinduism. Well worth reading for anyone interested in knowing the true history of Hinduism. Thought-prov...

Work of scholarship

Need an open unbiased mind to analyse the views of Ms Doniger. Her views on Prakrit preceding Sanskrit is convincing and acceptible. Laudable effort in reading the suppressed voices of History

A Lifetime's worth of scholarship

Excellent book from one of the leading voices on Hinduism; I bow down to Doniger's wealth of knowledge and dedication to the religion. Her shrieking dissenters ought to read her books - there is so much to learn in them! This is something like a companion volume to her earlier work - The Hindus: An Alternative History, and again, she peels the layers of complexity to present some very academic and scholarly material in an extremely readable and accessible manner. Her sense of humour is rarely...

Knowing the history of one's religion is a must

The relationship with one's religion is as personal and intimate as with the people of one's family. Knowing where the religions comes from, and the paths it has taken, is as essential as knowing the road on any long journey. And history is what was, not what we want it to be. Keeping an open mind, tolerance, and an understanding of the 'flaws' as well as the good, is the best medicine for fanaticism. I wish they would teach us a history of our respective religion along with its tenets. Relig...

Congratulations to Aleph Book Company, by adding another feather in their cap, they've once again shown their spirit of publishing books, of highest standards.

Here, we have a "rare gem" churned out after decades of experience and scholarly work, by Wendy Doniger- an authority over Hinduism. A subject of mythology to someone and faith to the masses.

This book is likely draw some intense reactions( esp. from thin skinned people) not only because of author's insights but her approach to th...

Awesome

I have read few pages but every thing is written with deep knowledge on the subject with references by the author , right wing elements can give negative rating to these kinds of book because it exposes the truth of hindu dharam and its philopsy on caste system , on women.
Know I have placed other books of the author

An attempt to tranish Hinduism

This book is complete misinterpretation of Hindu religion, written to confuse Hindus and to portray a tarnished image of Hinduism in world. I urge the readers to please read Invading the sacred which is freely available online.
