Optimization Methods in Operations Research and System Analysis  (English, Paperback, Mital K.V.)

The mathematical aspects of Operations Research and Systems Analysis concerned with optimization of objectives form the subject of this book. In its revised, updated and enlarged third edition, discussion on linear programming has been expanded and recast with greater emphasis on duality theory, sensitivity analysis, parametric programming, multi objective and goal programming and formulation and solution of practical problems. Chapters on nonlinear programming include integer programming, Kuhn-Tucker theory, separable and quadratic programming, dynamic programming, geometric programming and direct search and gradient methods. A chapter on Theory of Games is also included. A short note on Karmarkar`s projective algorithm is given in the appendix.

The book keeps in view the needs of the student taking a regular course in operations research or mathematical programming, and also of research scholars in other disciplines who have a limited objective of learning the practical aspects of various optimization methods to solve their special problems. For the former, illustrative solved examples and unsolved examples at the end of each chapter, small enough to be solved by hand, would be of greater interest, while for the latter, summaries of computational algorithms for various methods which would help him to write computer programmes to solve larger problems would be more helpful. A few computer programmes in Fortran IV have also been given in the appendix.

K.V. Mittal (b.1918). M.Sc. (Mathematics and Physics), Allahabad University; Ph.D., Roorkee University (Now IIT, Roorkee). Lecturer in Mathematics, Mahakoshal Mahavidyalaya, Jabalpur, 1949-50. Joined Roorkee University as Lecturer in 1950, and retired as Professor of Mathematics in 1979. Visited Case Institute of Technology (now Case-Western Reserve University), USA. in 1964-65 for research. Visiting Professor of Mathematics, University of Cochin, Kerala, 1980. Visiting faculty member, Department of mathematics, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, USA, 1981-82, 1983-84. Among his other books are: Theory of Elasticity, Pothshala (Private) Limited, Allahabad, 1969 History of Thomson College of Engineering, University of Roorkee, 1986; Understanding Mathematics and Computers, New Age International (P) Limited, New Delhi, 1996.

Dr. Chander Mohan is Professor at Department of Computer Science, Ambala College of Engg. & App. Research, Ambala, India. He has also been associated with a number of various reputed institutions in the same capacity. He has obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Roorkee University, Roorkee, India in 1967 and has been teaching since then.

Prof. Mohan has published over 90 research publication in various research journals and wrote three books on technical subjects. He ha also won several prestigious awards like Millennium Award of Honour-American Biographical Institute. He is a fellow member of international Astronomical Union: Operations Research Society of India: Founder Member of Indian Astronomical society and Founder Member, Executive Committee Member of Indian Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
