  • Description
Othello by William Shakespeare is a tragedy that delves into themes of jealousy, betrayal, and manipulation. The play centers on Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army, who secretly marries Desdemona, a Venetian noblewoman. Their union incites the envy of lago, Othello's ensign, who harbors a deep-seated resentment towards Othello for promoting Cassio over him. lago cunningly manipulates those around him, including Roderigo, Cassio, and even Othello himself, to sow seeds of doubt and jealousy. He insinuates that Desdemona has been unfaithful with Cassio, stoking Othello's suspicions and driving him to madness. Othello is overcome with remorse and guilt after discovering the truth about lago's treachery and Desdemona's innocence. He takes his own life, unable to bear the weight of his actions. "Othello" explores the destructive power of jealousy and the consequences of unchecked manipulation.

    Author Info
    • William Shakespeare was an English poet, dramatist, and actor considered by many to be the greatest dramatist of all time. He occupies a position unique in world literature as no writer’s living reputation can compare to that of Shakespeare, whose plays are now performed and read more often and in more countries than ever before. He spent his early life in Stratford-upon-Avon, receiving at most a grammar-school education, and at age 18 he married a local woman, Anne Hathaway. By 1594 he was apparently a rising playwright in London and an actor in a leading theatre company. Shakespeare’s earliest plays date from the late 1580s to the mid-1590s and include the comedies Love’s Labour’s Lost, The Comedy of Errors, The Taming of the Shrew, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream; history plays based on the lives of the English kings, including Henry VI, Richard III, and Richard II; and the tragedy Romeo and Juliet.
