    Description
The Partition of India in 1947 caused one of the great human convulsions of history. The statistics are staggering. Twelve million people were displaced; a million died; seventy-five thousand women are said to have been abducted and raped; families were divided; properties lost; homes destroyed. In public memory, however, the violent, disturbing realities that accompanied Partition have remained blanketed in silence. And yet, in private, the voices of Partition have never been stilled and its ramifications have not yet ended. Urvashi Butalia's remarkable book, the outcome of a decade of interviews and research, looks at what Partition was intended to achieve, and how it worked on the ground, and in people's lives. Pieced together from oral narratives and testimonies, in many cases from women, children and dalits- marginal voices never heard before- and supplemented by documents, reports, diaries, memoirs and parliamentary records, this is a moving, personal chronicle of Partition that places people, instead of grand politics, at the centre. These are the untold stories of Partition, stories that India has not dared to confront even after fifty years of independence.

Very Moving accounts of personal experiences

As a researcher and writer Urvashi stands out. The narration in the book is extremely moving and one comes in touch with the reality of "partition" through these accounts. When we read about the partition in history books, we hardly feel the pain that people may have gone through during those times because many things are abstracted away. One cannot help but shed tears on reading the first hand accounts presented in this book . Kudos to Urvashi for capturing the narrations so effectively.

    An essential Book.

I liked this book for its narrative qualities of the great catastrophic Indian partition. But, this book is more oriented towards the Punjab Partition and almost neglected the Bengal's Partition which was happened at the same time and perhaps much more vicious in nature.
    Anyway, it was good read.

Urvashi Butalia is the by-word for anything related to the Partition of 1947. This book is not complicated at all, and is suited for people from varied fields.

Silences that resonate within you..a must read

The Partition of India was the great price that the country paid for Freedom. It was a division that gave birth to a perpetual conflict between counties that were united not only through its boundaries but also through a bond of love and we feeling. Partition changed the lives of the people forever. It altered the future of not only the two newly formed countries of India and Pakistan but also profoundly and permanently changed the future course of the entire sun-continent. The are so many st...

For a normal person by a normal person.

The book is good. In the first instance, the first page itself you get connected with the writer, with the confusions of life on some really important and painful decisions.

It tells the story of the people who really saw, experienced partition who really were partitioned by it.
