Pather Panchali is a coming-of-age story set in rural Bengal, written by renowned Bengali author Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. The novel depicts a poor Brahmin family’s struggle to survive in their dilapidated ancestral home.

    Summary of the Book

Pather Panchali portrays the life and struggle of the Roy family in their ancestral village in Bengal. It is a literary masterpiece and is considered one of the best Bengali novels ever written. The novel very vividly and beautifully portrays the life of a poor family seen through the eyes of Apu and Durga, the two young children of the family. The author writes about Apu and Durga and their friends with a natural realism and innocence. This book was later adapted into a film of the same name by Satyajit Ray.

    About Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay was a leading Bengali writer and novelist. He was born on September 12, 1894, in Ghoshpara-Muratipur village in Bengal. His childhood days were marred by acute poverty. After his schooling at the Bongaon High School, he went on to complete his undergraduate studies majoring in History, Sanskrit and Economics from the Surendranath College, Kolkata. Soon after this he joined the teaching profession. He also worked as a traveling publicist and secretary before returning to becoming a teacher. The author married twice and had a son from his second wife. He died on November 1, 1950. Bandyopadhyay received the Rabindra Puraskar (posthumous award) in 1951.

His works are primarily set in rural Bengal with characters inspired from that region. His loneliness after the death of his first wife influenced the theme of tragedy that characterizes some of his earliest works. A few of his literary works are Ashani Sanket, Aparajito and Debjan.

An Exquisite novel. Changed my life.

Pather Panchali is my favourite book. It is not a book; it is sustenance, its life, it’s the air in my lungs. Pather Panchali changed my life forever. For the entire period of my reading of the book, I could not eat, sleep or even lead my normal life. I became a recluse, a mendicant, a forlorn; not wanting to come out of the state of mind I was slowly finding myself into. I was so deeply affected reading about Apu, Durga and his little impoverished family living in their ancestral village of ...

    A page Turner !!

Twenty eight chapter were there, divided into two parts.
Each chapter on reading left my eye with tears. Honestly, while reading I never realized when did the hour hand of clock turned 180 degree. Forget hunger, forget going to loo, forget …You will for sure forget everything in order to just know ' Now lord will have mercy on them '. Alas !! DURGA, OPU and all.

Finally after five year of gap, my earlier favorite novel descended one step to give way up to this novel.

    Classic Indian Novel

Its just a shame that truly spectacular Indian classical novels like this never get critical world acclaim. In this case this book was made into a popular feature film by satyajit ray. Compared with the depth of this novel the movie is just water drop compared to the mighty ocean.

The novel is layered at multiple levels , it can be read primarily as how modern life plucks people out of their lives and made them loose their roots. The novel is the life of two children Opu and Durga in the vi...

    Pather Panchali

I read this novel in bengali some twenty years back during my college days when to me it was just another good novel. But now reading it again after a gap ot twenty years it gave me a different insight into the novel. Its as if I am flowing through the timeless happiness with the two innocent souls whose virginity hasn't been inflicted by the so called evolution of mankind. You feel like breaking all the shackles and barriers of life and go back in time to be there with Durga and Opu and enjo...

    THE SONG OF THE ROAD

Pather Panchali is an incomparable novel. It is a timeless classic of Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhayaya. There a lot of dimensions in this novel. One is the ever flowing time through which apu and durga flow. Another is the socio-economic condition of Bengal which forced them to live in poverty. Another is nature which silently unfolds everything in the novel, apu's rapport with nature has been remarkably portrayed by Bibhutibhusan in the novel and his growing up as a mature person is also reflec...
