  • Description

Choosing a name for one’s child has never been an easy task, and The Penguin Book Of Hindu Names by the former Indian minister Maneka Gandhi aims to help the family members of newborns with the same.

    Summary Of The Book

While it might not seem substantial otherwise, the decision of naming one’s child seems like a Herculean task when one is faced with it. The Penguin Book Of Hindu Names has been written keeping the same in mind.

The book spans over 500 pages and serves as a comprehensive compilation of Hindu names for a newborn, along with details about their Sanskrit/Indian origin, their usage, and the multiple meanings the name might have in English.

Comprising of around 20,000 names in total, The Penguin Book Of Hindu Names is an extensively researched book that not only aims to help parents name their babies armed with the full knowledge of what the name stands for, but also seeks to help people, both scholars and curious readers, in understanding the in-depth meaning of different names.

    Excellent Research

An excellent book by Maneka. You can see the painstaking work and research carried out to bring this book. It gives us Sanskrit names with a very meaningful insight on each of them. This is also a better value for money deal than buying separate books for boys' and girls' names.

    Disappointed

Actually it is very exhaustive list, but the way names are spelled, it is very painful to read them.

Actual hindi / sanskrit writing of the names would have been great help

No use ... Better search on Net

Not useful, instead searching names was easier and fun on the Internet.
I bought this book, and was a waste of time and money.

This book is not practical or useful if you are looking to search a name for your new born.

Not enough girl names. Pronunciation is not described clearly. There are names which have derogatory meanings. Do not buy this product if you have easy access to the Internet. It seems like the book is written by someone who does not understand Sanskrit completely. There are names just for the sake of filling up the book.
