Summary of the Book

Portnoy’s Complaint is a monologue, as narrated by Alexander Portnoy to his psychoanalyst. The humorous monologue of the speaker is his confession to the psychoanalyst about his lust-ridden state of being. The book had created a storm of controversy due to its vivid and open depiction of sexuality, especially the detailed descriptions of masturbation using different props. Many of the characteristics in this book went on to become the trademarks of Roth’s writing.
