  • Description

The Discovery of India is the result of Jawaharlal Nehru’s three years of solitude during his imprisonment and his love for the written word and Indian history.

    Summary Of The Book

The Discovery of India is an honor paid to the rich cultural heritage of India, its history and its philosophy as seen through the eyes of a patriot fighting for the independence of his country.

Nehru’s love for this Indian legacy shines through the book’s curious mix of personal essays and reflections, philosophical surmises, and deep prose scattered among historical facts. It is not a book of historical evidence by its very nature, rather, it is the keen observations of a severely intelligent mortal that delves into the philosophical and altruistic aspect of a nation’s history and the groundwork it presents to build a strong future foothold.

The Discovery of India is the realization of a silver lining. At the peak of the nation’s fight against the colonial rule through the “Quit India Movement”, Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned at the Ahmednagar Fort from 1942 to 1946, to keep him away from the political limelight. Forced to this dreary lonesomeness, Jawaharlal Nehru discovered time to re-live his creative passions. He rediscovered his love for gardening, prose, poetry, and badminton. Encouraged by this vastly stimulating environment and by his fellow inmates, Jawaharlal Nehru decided to pen down his thoughts and experiences living in the country he fiercely loved. He dedicated the book to the prisoners of Ahmednagar jail.

The journey in The Discovery of India begins from ancient history, leading up to the last years of the British Raj. He uses his knowledge of the Upanishads, Vedas, and textbooks on ancient history to introduce to the reader the development of India from the Indus Valley Civilization, through the changes in socio-political scenario every foreign invader brought, to the present day conditions. True to his multifaceted interests, the book is ripe with philosophy, art, social movements, economics, science, and religion.

This journey of discovery of his beloved nation became the nation’s most magnificent historical treatise ever written. It was adapted into the Indian television series titled Bharat Ek Khoj, released in 1988 by director Shyam Benegal.

    About Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru, a freedom fighter and independent India’s first Prime Minister, was born on 14 November, 1889. Alongside Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru remained a central figure in India’s independence struggle.

His other written works include Glimpses of World History and Toward Freedom.

Nehru was born in Allahabad to Motilal Nehru and Swaruprani Thussu. Nehru studied natural science at Trinity College, and later studied law at Inner Temple. He gave the nation the most significant speech, A Tryst with Destiny, when he became the Prime Minister. Jawaharlal Nehru was awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955.

    True Masterpiece!!!

You will get enthralled by the sheer knowledge mixed with the rhetoric that this world leader possessed. The best part about this book is contionous stress on karma or untiring passion for betterment of country. An infant's adolescent mind is nurtured by its parents. Its sheer god's gift to have a parent like this man for an infant country. His thrashing of religions on basis of quiescence is amazing.

His depiction of 'Dams' as modern temples is again a work of far sighted statesman.. I thi...

    Just wow!

When you read these words without any preconceived political view of Panditji, you can drench in the bliss that emanates the fragrance of India's novelty, this thousands years old Civilization smells like the petrichor of first monsoon in Panditji's words. Perchance you know the history of our Civilization in a much deeper layer but this book acquaints you with the depth of Indian thought. This is so beyond the dry history we were taught in our school days, this make you love the richness of...

    A journey of self-discovary

Bought this book for no particular reason except curiosity. But, the introduction by Sunil Khilnani (the author of The Idea of India) changed everything. He writes, "The Discovery of India integrates with grace and discretion the ideas of Tagore" and that "Nehru enjoyed playing with the polarities between and within the two men: Tagore as 'primarily the man of thought' and Gandhi a bundle of 'concentrated and ceaseless activity'. In reading 'The Discovery of India' it is interesting to observ...

    Terrific purchase

How can a politician write a book like this. He is more than a politician , a specialist is this field. We were fortunate to have him as our first PM. Indian diverse history is dealt with a dextrous touch. You will be a champ in indian history after reading this. Written in an as unbiased a manner as one could. For fine details one should go through Thappar's though.

    Great Read..Must Buy

It’s a great read that offers peeps into ancient Indian thought and reveals how advanced we were as pioneers of human thought and civilization. But much of the merits of Indian history have been more clearly expounded in ‘Glimpses of word history’, which is truly a remarkable book. Those points which have been explained in detail in ‘Glimpses’ have just been touched upon here.

Nehruji often digresses into recent(at the time of writing) events and World history in trying to explain implicatio...
