From the Holy Mountain: A Journey in the Shadow of Byzantium is a historical travel book by William Dalrymple.

    Summary of the Book

In 587 A.D., two monks, Friar John Moschos and his pupil Sophronius the Sophist, begin a journey across the entire Byzantine world. From the shores of the Bosphorus to the sand-crested dunes of Egypt, they travel collecting the tales of the stylites and the desert dwellers. They have to hurry, for they have little time left to save precious relics and manuscripts from obscure monasteries, from present-day Turkey to Egypt. They walked under the shadow of the impending flag of Islam which would take over most of the empire in the years to come. William Dalrymple retraces their journey through the writings they left behind, etching into history a tale fit to become an evensong for a perishing civilization.

    About the book:

I have never read a travelogue before. Though history always fascinated me but the idea of a historical travelogue seemed like a kebab mixed in honey. But nonetheless i bought this book by WD based on the topic.
I always wanted to know what was the religion of middle east before islam arrived. Like most of the "young generation" i forgot that Christianity is not a western religion it started in the...

    Delicious writing

The best part about Dalrymple's books are that though they are based on history which many would think is a drab topic, they read at the pace of a thriller. Combining fact, fiction and myth, this book is one of the best on the subject. William Dalrymple is an excellent author, and an even better story teller.

read this book... got new insight...but this book means that the spiritual meadows by john moschos must be read prior to get a proper understanding. i love this work as it connects all the dots and explains the situation about the christians in the middle east perfectly. it also makes us understand why the greek orthodox churches exists in middle east. i must say that this work increased my awareness about the plight that the minorities face.... worth a read.

    From the Holy Mountain

This is an excellent book which is eminently readable and contains new insights into the Christian world as it existed during the Byzantine period. Very well written, but then Dalrymple always writes well. Not a boring history book ! Very good read.
