Summary of the Book
Hastin has many responsibilities for a ten year old. He leaves his home when his sister falls ill, desperate to find money to work off the loan his family takes for her hospitalization. He journeys to a far off jungle to work as an elephant keeper, but he doesn’t realize what he is in for. He meets a cruel circus keeper who doesn’t respect the animals. He also meets Nandita, a young elephant who becomes his closest friend. However, Nandita is the star attraction: a soccer-playing and milk-bottle-balancing elephant that the ringmaster will do anything to keep going. She is chained whenever she’s not in the ring and is punished harshly when she refuses to learn her tricks. Hastin decides to protect her however he can, but escape seems to be a dream that he cannot turn real.
