    Description

Renowned Indian historian Ramachandra Guha profiles nineteen Indians who contributed significantly to the formation and evolution of our nation as a republic in his book, Makers of Modern India. It is edited and introduced by him, based on the excerpts from some of his rarest and the most compelling writings and speeches.

    Summary of the Book

The men and women whose vital roles in making the modern India discussed in this book were not only important political activists, but they also wrote with persuasiveness, power and deliberation. Dr. Guha asserts in his illuminating introduction, talks about those times as ‘the most contentious times in the most interesting country in the world’. The makers inspired the countrymen with their ideas and writings. They took us from the subcontinent’s first rendezvous with contemporaneousness in the nineteenth century, through the sequential stages of the freedom movement. This book emphasizes the little-known facets of important historical figures including Tagore and Nehru. It also talks about thinkers who have been unfairly forgotten, like Tarabai Shinde and Hamid Dalwai. Although their perspectives were sometimes complementary, and sometimes contradictory, their ultimate goal was the same. The topics they discovered and studied include nationalism, religion, language, caste, gender, colonialism, democracy, secularism and the economy – all of which were momentous in improving the human condition in our country. Some of those issues are still persistent to this day not just in India, but elsewhere in the world as well. Makers of Modern India will certainly enhance the knowledge of its readers. Dr. Guha once again offers a riveting read based on his years of study and expertise in Indian history.

A 'must read' for every Indian

Guha’s style of writing is easy to follow and I am reminded of “The Raj” by Lawrence James. The sheer extent of his research cannot but impress everyone who reads the book. He is consistent in his views and deals with personalities of people who are considered demi-gods in India and even controversial subjects like communalism in an even handed manner without sounding too opinionated or biased. Like many works of this size, there are bound to be instances where research fails him or where he...

    An eyeopener of a book

A superbly edited and compiled book - the clarity of thought of these great men of India in transition is astounding. My favourite is Ambedkar and Hamid Dalvai. Rajagopalachari is a surprise - I had not known of his free market views. A must read for those wish to understand this complex country.

A quick walk into the minds of great thinkers!!

Well the title is mis-leading with many "makers" which Mr Guha mentioned in the book didn't have significant impact on the society. It wold be better titled with "Thinkers of modern India"
However, the book is a marvellous compilation of some of the greatest thinkers ranging from 18th century to present day.One will be amazed while sneaking into the minds of 18th century thinkers and writers with their clarity of thoughts and broad view.

    Super!

I did not expect that this book will only be a collection of writings penned by the makers of modern India with a very short introduction to each maker. But this aspect gives the book it's charm, it gives you the chance to read the work of great reformist.

    Misleading title

As per author 'Makers of Modern India' have
    - original thinking
    - wealth of literature(books/articles/speeches)

    This leaves out people who
    1. Made modern india, but didn't write literature(Sardar Patel)
    2. Wrote literatures but author didn't find it to be original (Leftists, Naxals).

It also includes people who happen to have written literature(with original thinking) even if they didn't have any impact on society(Tarabai Shinde & Hamid Dalawi)

Overall armchair thinkers have been credite...

    Typical Guha !

An amazing introduction to modern Indian political thought through the words of the thinkers themselves. The opening and final essays are beautifully written emphasizing the profundity of Guha's thoughts expressed in simple prose. /

My favorite parts were Ambedkar's speeches in the constituent assembly and MK Gandhi's explanation for Non-violence as a strategy in struggle.

    Why not omit

I have read the book "The Makers Of Modern India"and have found it useful for refernces. but going through the review of the book at Flipkart.com,I am quiet appalled at some comments. The comments are made by some people regarding the non inclusion of the names of personalities like Ishwarchandra Vidyaasaagar and Swaami Vivekaanand.
My feeling is that the Reviewers are suffering from a false conceit arising from the false notion of thinking the Bengalis to be "The Most Artistic, Intellectual,...

Though, there are many personalities who contributed even having a name in the text. The book provides the thought of different personalities on challenges of Modern India and how these can be taken up.
The development of democratic values, principles of Equality, Elimination of Social Evils etc. have been main issues attracted the attention of the Makers of Modern India.

    Makers of Modern Indian

The book contains not so much famous personalities who have had a significant role in shaping up India. The book to some extent gives a certain overview of 19 makers of modern India, but mostly contains the essays, articles and letters written by these people in their period. Though it depicts the thoughts of these makers of India, but it is not comprehensive.
