  • Description
One of the world's oldest forms of faith, Hinduism has an unbroken trajectory of beliefs and rituals that have continued for many millennia through the footsteps of pilgrims and the pedagogies of theologists; through myth, science and politics. But what does all that mean to the modern Hindu today? Why do Hindus call themselves so? Is it merely because their parents were Hindus? In what way does the faith speak to those who profess to follow it? What does Hinduism mean to the everyday-practicing or sometimes-accessing ordinary Hindu? Away from the raucous debate around religion, this is the journey of a common Hindu, an attempt to understand why, for so many Hindus, their faith is one of the most powerful arguments for plurality, for unity in diversity, and even more than the omnipresent power of God, the sublime courage and conviction of man. Being Hindu is an exploration of Hinduism in a way you have never seen before, almost through your own eyes. This is the first book on Hinduism to have won the Wilbur Award given by the Religion Communicators Council of America for excellence in writing about religion.

Debunks misconceptions & gives a clear picture

A well written book by the one who has researched the concept very deeply. Many popular misconceptions about Hinsuism are prevalent in the world today. This book debunks them and gives a very clear picture about what Sanatana Dharma actually is. Loved reading this book and gifted it to 3 of my friends. This one must be shared and taught to others. Great job !

    Very Good

The best part is that through his writing style, Mr. Sengupta was able to engage the reader. Making such a subjective matter a verbal dialogue kept the readers involved throughout. His extensive research on matters - philosophical, historical and scientific to summerise Hinduism and its various aspects is commendable.

Highly recommended for factual insights on various questions concerning dharma comparing other world religions of sematic faiths. While it portrays that the oldest dharma is...

    Rediscovering Hinduism

There is immense knowledge embedded in our culture, ritual, practices, religious texts, etc. Due to western influence, we have been unable to appreciate the true worth of all this knowledge. This book helped an atheist like me in rekindling the interest in religion and spirituality. The writer, from his own experiences, tell how he used to view Hinduism when he a child receiving education in one of those catholic schools, and how he rediscovered deep essence in all that he used to think was d...

    Outstanding Book

A book that the youth must read and absorb.

    Few observations:
    1. The book is full of anecdotes which makes it thoroughly readable.
    2. Each chapter is exploratory in nature and the author makes you identify Hinduism with your own life.
    3. Each chapter ends with a fascinating question.

Learnt a lot about Hinduism and its spirit of inquiry, Highly recommend this to any Indian facing an identity crisis emanating from his faith.

Easy conversational style makes it an engrossing read. Hindol Sengupta has researched well. This is a must read especially for Hindus who, enthralled by western Ideas and bogus Secularism, debunk own religion and culture.
