    Description

Curfewed Night, by Basharat Peer, is a poignant memoir of life, love, and war in Kashmir.

    Summary of the Book

This valiant piece of literary reporting reveals the most affecting personal stories that depict the aftermath of conflict in Kashmir. It depicts the tale of a man’s love for his homeland, the agony of leaving and the joy of returning. It paints vivid pictures of the Separatist Movement that has consumed Kashmir since 1989, leading to the killings of thousands of people in the battle between India and Pakistan over the region. The author recounts stories from his youth and chronicles the heartrending tales of the many Kashmiris he met years later when he became a reporter. The stories include a mother who had no choice but to watch her son hold an exploding bomb by Indian troops, a young man who joined a Pakistani training group and a poet who found solace in religion after his whole family was viciously massacred. The book describes how a place once considered a paradise on Earth, has been reduced to a despondent and wretched war zone today.

    Thought provoking

Its difficult to describe how good and how important a book Curfewed Night is. Most Indians think they have a fair understanding of the conflict in Kashmir and to be honest, I too was one of them. However Basharat Peer's excellent book made me realise how little I knew about what was going on in one of the most beautiful states in our country.

Basharat had done a very good job in piecing together the different pieces that make up the Kashmir puzzle and the amount of research that he has don...

    Beautifully expressed though Pro-Azadi book

From the very first page, the writer- Basharat Peer captures your imagination by the nostalgic description of Kashmir of 80s, but after few initial pages it becomes vivid account of 90s and early 2000s-Militancy uprising, daily bloodshed and bombings, Army rule, AFSPA, Sufferings of Kashmiris, Kashmiris Support for the Militants fighting for "Azaadi" and all- By his writings you get to know that he had a soft heart for the Militants...and, at times seems to forcefully rue the fact that Kashmir...

Mr. Basharat peer just made me to get immersed in my childhood days. When I was not able to comprehend things at that stage, the truthfulness of Mr. Basharat Peer made me just to rewind and understand what was happening around me, when I wasn't a blessed enough to understand. I would like to thank Mr. Basharat Peer for the efforts, hard work, and the truthfulness with which He has put up the case. My wishes are with you Mr. It takes a lot....

    Must Read

The book is a great work in writing. The author has crafted his work intertwining the daily life of a Kashmiri with the rise of insurgency in the region. The book is a vivid example of the contrasting lives of people in war and those living in relatively peaceful regions. The crisp review by Khushwant Singh on the cover of the book says it all.

A virtual tour of Kashmir of 90s.

It was a book worth reading. You will come to know about real scene of Kashmir. Basharat Peer sir has written it beautifully, unbiasedly.
I'll love more and more people reading it and knowing the situations which Kashmiris went through during those torrid time of 90s and early 2000s.
Some parts of the book will bring tears to your eyes, reading how much the innocents had to suffer, eg.- the rape of a newly married bride; while some parts like the epilogue will bring you tears of joy and hap...

    A Great Kashmiri Experience

To an Indian, Kashmir has always been considered as a "heaven on earth". But things have drastically changed during the 90's. And this change of Kashmir from a calm and quite valley to a warzone has been well narrated by Basharat Peer in his Curfewed Night.

This book is about Kashmir and by a Kashmiri. It reflected the problems faced by a common Kashmiri post 90. Not only it gives you minute details of several incidents which has touched the author's life, but deals with the insight of diff...

    Kashmir from a Kashmiri

I purchased the book with no inkling of the content inside it. I was just attracted to the fact that it was a book on Kashmir written by a Kashmiri.

The book really opens your eyes. I was born in the 80's and I was never aware of the exact reasons for the beginning of the armed conflict in Kashmir...Its not a historical treatise....it just shows how little we know about Kashmir and the struggles of its natives....

Kudos to the author for the brilliant book and thank you for sharing the plig...
