In The God Market: How Globalisation is Making India More Hindu, Nanda looks into the rising Hinduisation of India and how politicians are using Hindu rituals, traditions, and gurus to their advantage.

    Summary Of The Book

Beginning with the post-independent era of our country, The God Market: How Globalisation Is Making India More Hindu goes on to explore how globalization has made our country more religious. The book is divided into five distinct sections. The first part discusses India and the Global Economy. It begins with neo-liberalism and goes on to discuss the important religious and political events of the post-independent era. This part also discusses the beginning of the modern welfare state, the emergence of nationalistic movements, ideological movements, and the democratic process.

The next section is titled The Rush Hour of the Gods. It discusses the alarming rate at which religiosity is increasing among the middle class in our country. Backed by research, Nanda highlights how religion has become more fervent today and how this is being exploited and encouraged by the new age Gurus. The third section discusses the State-Temple-Corporate Complex and the Banality of Hindu Nationalism. According to Nanda, religion and neo-liberalism dominate the society in India. This section explores the role of the government in matters of religion, and how the Hindu religion dominates a secular country. This section also focuses on the rapid rise in religious tourism and the Hindu influence on the education system.

The next part discusses India as a superpower and How We See Ourselves. Nanda discusses the feelings of cultural superiority among the Indians. She points how Hindus justify democracy and Nanda contrasts the Hindu notion with the objective facts. The final section is titled Rethinking Secularization. It discusses the contemporary global trends in secularism and religiosity. With examples, Nanda demonstrates how globalization has led to increase in religiosity. The final chapter tries to understand how we can rethink secularization and how globalization has actually affected our evolution.

The God Market: How Globalisation Is Making India More Hindu was originally published in 2009.

    Good if hinduism is rising..

If Hinduism is gaining more popularity in india and getting strong with every passing day...i dont think this is in anyway a danger to india. If the children of India will not know hinduism, if children of india will not welcome the rise of hinduism then who else will?

Hinduism is soul of india and all indians should be proud of that. With india as centre, hinduism has already started to spread its beautiful wings in western countries. I totally disagree with this this book that dont like th...

    Shocking facts

In a more global context on how globalisation is making countries more religious, Meera Nanda examines how it happens in India. She has focused her efforts on Hinduism, the religion she grew up with, much like Taslima Nasrin criticising Islam. It is not a Congress or Leftist book as she has criticised both parties for promoting pseudo-sciences in different contexts. This book is more of facts and events than emotionally motivated speeches.

    Fascinating Book

I purchased this book in Amazon kindle store. I would think this books reveals the truth about how pervasive and pernicious the spread of corporate-temple-state complex can be.

    Cheap Thrills of Pseudo-Secularism

If ever a book was written so unabashedly one-sided, almost like a stooge from Congress, this would win hands down. It does not even make an attempt to write an impassive critique. Hinduism is made out to be a monster which can take over the other dogmatic religions simply because it is a way of life and not a monotheistic faith like others. What more, she keeps blaming the BJP government for regularization of hinduism in society when they were in govt for only 5 years and congress for the ot...

    Irrelevant comparison, Logic-less deduction

This will probably go down as the worst book ever written about understanding India or Hinduism.

What has Globalisation to do with making India more Hindu is so poorly connected that, a reader who understands globalism would be wondering what hit him.

Her rudimentary knowledge and borrowed phrases from Gurcharan Das's "India Unbound"
    are clearly devoid of context.

It is never "Congress led UPA" but always "BJP led NDA". And all the ills of Hinduism (which itself is blatant blasphemy of ...

    Unappealing book

I wasted my money on this. The author has a very superficial look through the western lens. Many social narratives are simply not factored.
Intellectually diminishing book, reminds me of Romilla Thappar older work.
