    Winner of Commonwealth Book Prize,Asia

Chinaman is the story of W.G. Karunasena, a fictional retired sports writer and major alcoholic. In his last days, Karunasena decides to make a documentary on Sri Lankan cricket, with special focus on Pradeep S. Mathew, a forgotten Sri Lankan spin bowler. Karunasena, along with his friend Ari, sets off on a journey to find him. As the story proceeds, Karunasena’s obsession becomes the prime focus of the book, along with other issues like his turbulent relationship with his wife and son, the underbelly of Sri Lankan cricket, and its association with bookies. The book shifts back and forth in time, as Shehan Karunatilaka, the author showcases fragments of the protagonist’s life and his relationships with the people around him. The book was awarded the Gratiaen prize in Sri Lanka.

    Not just cricket, by far...

You might just stop from picking this up because you've been bored of cricket, you've been fed up with useless tours to lanka, IPL, hyped up non performing players who think they are royalty. I understand, but this isn't about them. This isn't about cricket either, or rather just about cricket. You might be from Slovenia or Slovakia and don't know your bat from your wicket, the book will still do it for you. What is the book about? It's about growing up, about passions, about your dreams, abo...

    Stunning

Suddenly out of nowhere comes an absolute stunner. Delight to read - mixing a deadly combo of cricket, investigation, national politics, liquor and betting!
It is a dense book, but the kind that you try and read sparingly lest it finishes. I will recommend it very highly to people who love the game of cricket, like to know more about our relatively lesser known neighbour, and above all are looking to have a good, engaging and intelligent read.

    Amazing

I was intrigued when I read any a paper that Shehan Karunatilaka managed to show Sri Lankan culture using cricket as a metaphor in this book. Having read it, I can easily say that this is one of the best novels written using cricket as a backdrop. The mystery of Pradeep Mathew keeps one engaged till the end, and I must say that the ending was in no way damp, as often occurs in other books. The pace is very well maintained throughout, with doses of humour thrown in. must read

    Nice Book

This is the first time I have read a Sri Lankan Writer. The start is as good as the pinch hitting combination of Kalu and Jayasuriya. This book is superb in its content, narration and style. It is like a drive down memory lane where fact and fantasy intertwine and create a mesmerizing effect. There are certain lumps (Cricketing terms explained in between,Probably to grab a share in the non cricketing world). But overall this is an exceptional work. You dont need to be a Cricket fan to read this.If y...

    Fabulous, mesmerising. Absolutely loved it.

The book is unputdownable. Right from page 1, it unravels life on the little island of Sri Lanka. Sharp, witty writing with memorable characters.

If you're a cricket fan, you *need* to read this book. If you're not, don't worry. Cricket is just the trunk from which stem different branches of cricket, politics, business and entertainment. A tree abundant in the sub-continent.

Special mention: The 1996 World Cup. Nostalgic fruit always tastes sweet.

ever wondered where Malinga, murali and mendis got their actions from?

If you look forward to waking up at 5:00 am to watch test cricket in austrlia, then this book is definately for you. But this is a great book for mystery fans too, the book is revitting as it depends on newspaper reports, interviews, letters and not just on first person narratives. Even after finishing this book, I'm not sure if its a true story or not. But this book has a fascinating take on how Sri Lanka creates so many mystery bowlers.
