  • Description

The Lowland is the second novel written by Jhumpa Lahiri. It is the story of two brothers from Calcutta coming of age and the consequences of their choices.

    Summary of the Book

Subhash and Udayan were inseparable as brothers during their childhood. But they eventually tread their own ways as they grow older. Subhash goes on to pursue his Ph.D. in the United States, while his brother becomes involved in the Naxal activities in West Bengal. Still, Subhash’s life abroad is influenced by Udayan’s acts in the political movement in India. All Udayan wants to do is to create a better future for his loved ones. In his attempts to realize his dream, he fails to realize the terrible consequences of his choices. This title was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2013 and for the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2014. It was also a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction.

    A COMPELLING STORY

A great plot presented in an artistic style.

"The Lowland" is a well presented work of fiction on the fate of two brothers, Subhash and Udayan, who grow up together in the suburbs of Kolkata. They make a conscious decision in their mid twenties to lead different walks of life which are diametrically opposite to each other.

The author masterfully depicts the bonding they share with each other, the result of which, they end up sharing the same girl by the name Gauri. The story proceeds fur...

    Excellent product

I bought this item with three other items from different sellers. Got this one first and in 3 days.
The packaging was very good as usual and the book was wrapped in transparent plastic.
It was a shame to tear that plastic to read this book.
And about the book, this one is a page turner for sure. The novel is about two brothers who come of age in the 1950s and 60s in the city of Calcutta. When one of the brothers becomes involved in the Naxalite movement in the late 1960s, their paths diverge ...

    Great writing, slow plot

Lahiri writes the most lyrical, beautiful sounding prose and even if I don’t always like her stories and plot points, I do love the way she writes in general.

The plot of The Lowland though was a little disappointing. I have mentioned in the past that I didn’t think much of the book synopsis. It sounded like bits and pieces of different stories that I have already read or watched rolled up into one book. And after reading this book, I still stand by my opinion that as far as plots go, it is ...

Another Mesmerizing work by Jhumpa Lahiri

The story starts from a single point, then proceeds in every direction, and then in the last converges to the same in a very beautiful way. All the subplots of the story are very finely woven with each other. Although at some point reader may find the descriptiveness of the certain plots just like the works of Paulo Coelho, the intricacies in which they are done will left you speechless in the last. I can only say that after reading the end of the story, reader will be amused and amazed by th...

A must read for everyone who loves English and Kolkata

This book is for people who truly appreciate art , literature and above all the English language. No wonder why it won the nomination for Man Booker prize. Jhumpa Lahiri's pen works are strokes of brushes through which she literally draws the characters and paints them. This novel is an appreciation of life's simplicity and depicts the limitation of endeavor before destiny. It shows the melancholy ways in which everything around us can be appreciated. The subtle messages from everyday life and...

    Worst book ever

It's the worst book I have read in years. The start is very boring. Not that it becomes better later on, but a good start usually keeps the reader interested. For eg Khalid Hosseinis' books always have a good start. It took me more than a month to finish reading this book, and mind you, I am not a slow reader. It is that boring. The characters are dull, the way they are portrayed is also dull. The plot itself is insipid. It's about two brothers having completely different characters and belie...
