It's an amazing book which is continued by THE ROOM ON THE ROOF by Ruskin Bond. And I will specially recommend this book for 13-16 years children.

it tells the story of our special mr. bond relating to his teen age..more of his struggle to survive without money, parents, and any support..it is full of his friendships and few affairs at that time ..and what led him to leave india for some time..it was surprising to know how much he had to suffer at that time..like sleeping on the parks etc..
read it to know him better..and much deeper..
