Caribbean stylo/muyalmasal (Stylosanthes hamata) is a semi-erect, short-lived perennial open grazing tropical legume grass, up to 80cm high. It stems are slender, multi-branched, spread and non-determinate. It can grow on a wide range of soils, except heavy clay, which normally stay above 18 degree c temperature and also have some tolerance to salt. It drought resistant legumes, comes up well in areas receiving a minimum rainfall of 450-800mm annually. During the cultivation period, care should be taken to provide sufficient moisture. Plough the field two to three times to obtain good tilth. For line sowing (30x25cm) the seed rate is 3 kg/acre or broadcast by using sand soil 1:2 ratio (1 ratio of seeds and 2 ratio of sand), for broadcasting seeds require for 4 kg/acre. First harvest for 75-80 days after sowing and subsequent harvest are 30 days once (when the flowers show up move to open grazing). During the first year, the yield is usually little low but after it establishes with self seeding the density and number of crop increases. A crop yield is 6-7 t/acre/year in if 6-7 cuts; it comes up to 2 yrs. Presence of high nutrient level for protein content is 12-17%. Seeds possess hard seed coat and dormancy in nature, to get better germination seeds must be treated in hot water 80 oc for 10-15mins. Then seeds should be soaked in normal water with 400gm of azospirillum (1kg of seed) over night (12-15 hr) and then seeds should be shade dry before sowing for 1 hour. Hand weeding can be done as and when necessary. Uses like open grazing, green fodder, silage, natural protein mix to increase body weight of rabbit, goat and sheep and increase yield of milk in cow and buffalo.
