he Kasavu saree is also called Settu saree and was originally only a dhoti, blouse, and a stole that went across the blouse. There are many women in Kerala who still wear this type of saree. The modern day Kasavu saree has a golden border which is woven with real threads of gold. But to keep up with the times, these sarees have started coming out in different colours and artificial gold thread. 

Kanjeevaram from Tamil Nadu

Kanjeevaram sarees are known as the queen of sarees for their rich colour and texture. They are made from a traditionally woven silk from the town of Kanjeevaram. These sarees are extremely elegant and graceful. Bridal sarees in South India are usually Kanjeevaram sarees .   

Bomkai from Odisha 

The Bomkai saree is also known as Sonepuri silk and it is a piece of art because it has embroidery, ikat, and intricate thread work. These sarees come in silk as well as cotton and are really good for festive wear.       

Sambalpuri from Odisha

Sambalpuri sarees are traditional handwoven sarees that are delicately woven with different techniques. The rich colour of these sarees never fade because their threads are dyed before being woven.  

Paithani from Maharashtra

Paithani sarees are from a place called Aurangabad in Maharashtra. These sarees are handwoven but are very grand and elegant. The zari borders, fine motifs, and recurring peacock designs are what sets the paithani sarees apart. 

Bandhani from Gujarat   

The word Bandhani was derived from the word, “bandhan”, which means ties. This refers to the process through which these sarees are made “tie and dye”. The 2 states famous for these sarees are Rajasthan and Gujarat. But, the Khatri community weavers of Gujarat are known as the pioneers of Bandhani sarees. These weavers practise the art of creating the Bandhani saree to this day.

Mugu from Assam 

Assam is famous for the Mugu silk saree which is made by a special kind of silk that is only produced by a larvae that feeds on two special leaves. The resulting silk from this particular larvae is known for its glossy and durable nature. The golden threads of Mugu are said to be found only in Assam.  

Banarasi from Varanasi  

Banarasi sarees are famous for their silver and gold zari designs and motifs. These sarees were woven for people of royal stature as each saree was made of real silver and gold threads. The time taken to create one saree was usually more than a year as the detailing in Banarasi sarees is intricate. But these days, you can find many Banarasi bridal sarees that are grand as well as beautiful. 

Pochampally from Telangana 

The Pochampally silk is from the town of Boodhan in Andhra Pradesh. Pochampally sarees have geometric ikat designs, intricate motifs and are made of the right combination of cotton and pure silk.      

Chanderi from Madhya Pradesh

Chanderi sarees are a beautiful blend of silk, zari, and cotton. The resulting fabric is as light as feather and has a a royal sheen. These sarees are very easy to wear and will keep your woes at bay if you’re fussy with your sarees.  

Konrad Sarees from Tamil Nadu  

Konrad Sarees were originally woven for temple deities. These sarees have either stripes or checks and a wide border. The borders of these sarees have motifs of animals and natural elements which makes them one of a kind. 

Leheriya from Rajasthan 

The Leheriya saree is another form of the Bandhani saree. The only difference being a different technique of tie and dye. The way the cloth is tied when it’s going through the dyeing process is different in the Leheriya saree

Phulkari from Punjab 

Phulkari sarees have thread work in bright hues and in the shape of flowers. The Phulkari embroidery is more popular in the form of dupattas and it is usually created with cotton blends or khadi fabrics. 

Chikankari from Lucknow

Chikankari sarees are traditionally done on a muslin cloth and are very exquisite. These are available in almost all kinds of fabrics these days.
