Handloom Sarees Online: The Indian Heritage

There’s something about handloom sarees that makes them special. Women, all over India buy handloom sarees as they are so comfortable and are available in elegant prints and patterns.  Six yards of absolute elegance, these sarees make the perfect gift for every woman and that includes you too. Originally hand woven by skilled weavers spread all across the country, handloom sarees have come a long way and now as they’re mostly machine-made. Yet, there is a small cottage industry in rural India that thrives on the sales of these sarees.

Wide Variety To Choose From

There is so much to choose from when it comes to handloom sarees online. From Madras (Chennai) checks and tie and dye sarees from the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat to Dhakai Jamdani from West Bengal, there is so much that you can choose from. Jacquards from Uttar Pradesh and brocades from Banaras (Varanasi), also falls under the category of handloom sarees. Even the simple cotton sarees fall under this category. Every region has their own handloom saree variety and each is unique though there has been a lot of stylistic and technical exchange. Like the Coimbatore handloom sarees are inspired from Chanderi sarees of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Even Dhakai Jamdani is originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh and now you get them in West Bengal too.

There is also the Surat tanchoi that is based on a special technique of satin weaving. The extra weft floats are absorbed into the fabric itself. The Baluchari technique is another famous weaving technique among the weaves in Murshidabad district of West Bengal—they tell stories on the sarees with intricate thread work. It is believed that all these techniques have their roots in Varanasi. Assam is famous for muga and eri silk. Muga sarees are durable and they have a lustrous finish that becomes better with every wash. Assam silk sarees look beautiful and are famous all over the world. Ikat is another popular saree that is loved by all Indian women. Ikat sarees are known as patola sarees in Gujarat, chitki in Andhra Pradesh, and bandha in Orissa. Most of these varieties are not known by their regional names. In the tie and dye process, warp threads and weft threads are used to give different colors to the design.

A Handloom Silk Sarees for Every Occasion

One of the best things about handloom sarees is the fact that there’s at least style for every occasion. Starting from the simple cotton sarees and Lucknow chikankari that you can wear to work to ikat and patolas for weddings, handloom sarees are designed to suit every woman’s need. Handloom saree designs are aplenty and there’s something everyone. Traditional yet contemporary, these are a must-have in every modern woman’s wardrobe. Bhagalpuri, tant, Assam silk, garad, kantha, bandhej, and tangail are some of the best varieties that you can opt for if you’re someone who likes to dress sober or for a morning function. Hand batok sarees look elegant as well. On the other hand, if you’re someone who prefers to dress gorgeous, consider varieties like Banarasi, Kanjivaram, and Pochampally. Bollywood-style handloom sarees are also available these days.

Handloom Sarees Fabric

Different kinds of fabric are used as the base material for these handloom sarees. Pure fabric like silk is of course more expensive that mixed fabric. Handloom cotton sarees are soft on the skin and very comfortable to wear. The sarees designs of handloom cotton sarees are usually simple making these sarees perfect for everyday and formal wear. Muslin handloom sarees are also very comfortable and are ideal summer wears. Silk handloom sarees are more gorgeous and usually come with rich thread or brocade work. They are available in different bright colors and are more suitable for weddings and festivals. Simple silk sarees are also available in neutral and pastel hues. Art silk, georgette, brasso, lace, poly silk, crepe, and chiffon are some of the other common fabric used in making handloom sarees. Velvet handloom sarees usually come with embellishments and embroidery and are deemed as party wears.

Myriad Prints And Patterns

Solid and plain handloom sarees are very popular and a lot of women are seen wearing these to offices and other formal events. Checkered handloom sarees look elegant and graceful as well. The patterns on the handloom sarees are usually inspired from Mughal motifs like paisleys, flowers, and leaves. Embroidered, appliqued, hand painted, and embellished handloom sarees are available as well.
