Susan Cain’s Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking is a bestselling non-fiction book that celebrates introverts, often undervalued in our society, even though they form a considerable chunk of our population, and contribute invaluably to every sphere as politicians, leaders, artists, writers and so on.

    Summary Of The Book

Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking is a non fiction book written in 2012 by Susan Cain. The book essentially highlights the fact that western society is largely dominated by extroverts, while introverts remain in the shadows, often underutilised and undervalued, despite the strengths, skills, and talents they possess.

The book goes on to explain the innate differences between introvert and extrovert personality types, their differing brain chemistry, scientific connotations, advantages, and disadvantages of each temperament that they signify. The book’s findings are based on detailed research in areas of neuroscience, psychology, and evolution, all well documented within its content. Providing many examples from history, the book asserts that introversion is a normal human trait, in fact, some of the world’s greatest leaders and creative individuals have been introverts.
In Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking, the author studies the history of western society over the years, and notes the shift from an emphasis on character to an emphasis on personality, leading to an ‘extrovert ideal’ in a culture where being an introvert is regarded as an inferior quality.

Breaking this myth, the book stresses on the importance of these individuals in society. It offers helpful insights and tools for introverts to understand themselves, and function better in this extrovert driven society. It also urges them to utilise their untapped potential, skills, and talents, by selecting areas of work best suited for them, offering them advice on better communication and personal relationships with others.

On a larger scale, the book calls for a change in the attitude of society towards introverts, at the workplace, at home through parenting techniques, and in schools. They must not be chastised for being sensitive, serious, and shy, or it would draw them into a shell, leading to a tremendous waste of human potential and happiness.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking has been praised by critics and writers in the literary world alike. Some have considered it a timely, deeply insightful, and life altering book that permanently changed how one views others, especially introverts. The book ranked second in The New York Times bestseller list, and was voted The Best Non-fiction Book of 2012, by Goodreads Choice Awards.
