    Raakshas Review

Raakshas by Piyush Jha, promises an insight into the mind of what seems to be India’s no. 1 killer.

What I am expecting is an in depth, thoroughly researched book on a serial killer, giving us an idea of his emotional state, why he is the way he is, what drives him to do what he does and the minute details that encompass an investigation that happens in the hunt of a serial killer.

What I get instead is a string of events, each progressively more gruesome in narration, which is supposed to ...

    Predictable half-baked story

Raakshas is a story filled with generic character stereotypes – a mad scientist (he is a workaholic so obviously he will neglect the upbringing of his child), a ruthless killer whose childhood is traumatic (so obviously he will turn out to be a serial-killer), a Delhite dope-head teenager (because all urban children smoke pot) with a murky past stumbling on the path of goodness fuelled by regret rather than a passion for her profession.
The characters are almost too well sketched out in order...

One of it's kind in India, serial killing at it's best

There’s a lot of research in the West on serial killers but not in India, because we lack the acceptance that mental derangement can create these kinds of characters. Serial killers don’t look weird; they prefer a persona of perfectly normal person. Once you’re through with this book, you’ll realize that there might be one around you, on the streets.

‘Raakshas’ gives an appropriate introduction to the background of our protagonist and the circumstances that lead him towards insanity.

    Highly...

    good read

The writing is competent and the language is pretty functional and devoid of lengthy, pretentious prose. The characters are three dimensional and having shades of grey.Kudos to the writer for not portraying the protagonist as an epitome of all virtues.Likewise, the characterization of the killer is also very well done.Infact for me, the book worked more as a brilliant work of character study than a fast paced thriller. There are enough twists and turns happening at regular intervals which keeps t...

The ultimate book in crime thriller genre

Piyush Jha’s “Rakshasa” is one of its kinds of crime thriller book to have been ever published. The novel unravels the incidents and scenarios in the making of a serial killer. How is the person is treated psychologically, what makes him feel inferior and the path he treads to make himself feel superior. And how can a person under the similar circumstances take a very different path to make lives better and to fight for justice.
In the lust of power and superiority a serial killer goes on to...

    ‘Raakshas – India’s No. 1 Serial Killer’

‘Raakshas – India’s No. 1 Serial Killer’ has all the makings of a Bollywood blockbuster, as claimed on the front page of the book that it is being made into a ‘major motion picture’. It racy, full of suspense, and gives the reader an experience that very few other books have the capacity of doling out. Smooth transitions from character to character make the story a wonderful read, though serial killing is anything but wonderful. Combined with the revelations about mental illness and the stigm...

    Thought-provoking and captivating

Giving insight into the mind of a serial killer and how his behavior is affected by his mental illness, Piyush Jha spins the killer’s journey with such expertise and insight into both ends of the stick, that you are hard-pressed to decide whether to feel sorry or hate the killer. Properly a crime thriller, ‘Raakshas – India’s No. 1 Serial Killer’ begins with the story of a baby who, as he grows, experiences so much pain and trauma, that by the end of the book you understand his mental illness...

Spine-chilling to the very last page

Spine-chilling to the very last page, ‘Raakshas’ combines trauma, addiction, and thrilling suspense in a way that makes you vacillate between two completely different ends of the radar. You do not understand whether to feel sorry for the character or to feel angry about the guy deciding to eliminate people. But by the end of the book, Piyush Jha makes a solid point; that of people with a mental illness being unable to control themselves. Striving to become the No. 1 serial killer of India, gi...

    A captivating read

As blurb mentions, the plot is about a serial killer and the circumstances in his life which changed him to a Rakshas/ demon. There are two parallel stories covered from the starting - one about the life of serial killer and another about the woman police officer Maithili. It is interesting to see how these two stories are run in parallel and connect at the end.

I am not a big fan of psycho- thrillers but loved this book. I usually like murder investigations and detective novels, so loved t...

Well-written story of emotions and traumatic backstories!

I was under the impression that this book, ‘Raakshas – India’s No. 1 Serial Killer’ was completely non-fictional. I had bought it merely by looking at the front cover that I found interesting, and now I am glad I bought it. Excellent story-telling by Piyush Jha, who brings emotions and traumatic backstories in such measure and weaves them together that it is hard to decide who you feel most sorry for. Very well-written story.
