THE MONOGRAPH Purpose of the Monograph, and the prospective reader Research workers in the biomedical sciences should be encouraged to explore the extensive research opportunities afforded by the utilization of computers. The purpose of the Monograph is to stimulate such use of computers by two means : First, the survey of past, present, and proposed applications of computers indicates the great capabilities of computers and illustrates in a concrete fashion ideas and methods for tackling various problems utilizing computers. Second, the Monograph (with the exception of Part 1 - see below) is designed to function as a semi-handbook, as an attempt to assist in bridging the technical gap that frequently exists between the biological researcher's training and experience, and the knowledge he must have to use computers. It is not expected that it should or could be read from cover to cover. Quite the contrary, as a handbook it is expected to serve as a reference to various topics which might-arise in connection with the use of computers. This by no means implies that it Is necessary for a person using computers to know all the technical material contained in the handbook. But an attempt was made to include enough material so that a person working on a problem associated with the use of computers could refer to the handbook for needed information, and find there sufficient coverage for his purposes. The Monograph is directed toward the mature biomedical research worker, experienced in research work, and capable of reading and absorbing reasonably technical discussions and of grasping abstract concepts (i.e., the intended reader is not the proverbial layman). It is hoped that this work will play at least a small role in encouraging the more complete understanding and fuller...
