Description

Who killed twenty-four-year-old Priscilla Hart? And why would anyone want to murder this idealistic American student who had come to India to volunteer in a women's health programme? Had her work made a killer out of an enraged husband? Or was her death the result of a xenophobic attack? Was she involved in an indiscriminate love affair that had spun out of control? Or was she simply the innocent victim of a riot that had exploded in that fateful year of 1987 between Hindus and Muslims? Shashi Tharoor experiments brilliantly with narrative form, chronicling the mystery of Priscilla Hart's death through the often contradictory accounts of a dozen or more characters. Intellectually provocative and emotionally charged, Riot is a novel about the ownership of history, about love, hate, cultural collision, religious fanaticism and the impossibility of knowing the truth.

RIOT by Shashi Tharoor - a very readable book

When I picked up this book I wasn't sure what to expect. Shashi Tharoor on TV is extremely articulate and knowledgeable and so I decided to give his book a try. I'm glad I did. The book is very well written and manages to speed along on a carriage driven by romance, suspense and knowledge. By no means is this a book about cops but it does make us appreciate their role in a riot. We love to blame them for mishandling riots but theirs is a very tricky a delicate job. I wonder if Shashi Tharoor ...

Brilliant, Objective, Powerful

Riot is a work of fiction but the characters and places seem so authentic that one is compelled to believe otherwise. The love story is set in the midst of a bloody riot between Muslims and Hindus over the Babri Masjid/Ram Mandir issue. The historical background of the issue has been discussed at length. It is very well-argued from all points of view. The Muslim/Hindu/Sikh narratives are heartrending and powerful but, at the same time, objectivity has been upheld. It educates, entertains, aro...

A must read

The first thing that strikes you when you start the first page, is the unique narrative structure that Tharoor employs. This should not have come as a surprise, especially for someone who has already read The Great Indian Novel. Aside from the ingenious story telling, the story itself is wonderful. Brilliantly researched, and brings to the surface the colossal difficulties of curing India of it's most serious problems. Fierce stuff.
