Rusty, a sixteen-year-old Anglo-Indian boy, is orphaned and has to live with his English guardian in the claustrophobic European part in Dehra Dun. Unhappy with the strict ways of his guardian, Rusty runs away from home to live with his Indian friends. Plunging for the first time into the dream-bright world of the bazaar, Hindu festivals and other aspects of Indian life, Rusty is enchanted and is lost forever to the prim proprieties of the European community. This special edition marks the 60th anniversary of this award-winning book, written when the author was just seventeen. Poignant, heart-warming and an absolute classic, this book is forever a joy to read.

The First and not the Last

This was the first Ruskin book I read. It was so captivating that I read immediately its sequel 'Vagrants in the Valley'. The story takes place in the hilly area 'Dehra'. We get a vivid picture of this place; and after reading the book, whenever I think of this place, it is like a cool breeze blowing in the mind.

The story has many characters; the most unforgettable one is the spoilt but lovable, happy go lucky Kishen. The story gets a sudden turn after the tragic death of Meena, and it...

Did not Bond with the best

Maybe it is the age gap. Ruskin Bond's first book and I did not enjoy it. Very slow paced though the writing was promising. I was extremely curious about this book so I read it. Also, it was prescribed as a part of a writer's workshop that I attended. The story of an Anglo Indian boy and how he integrates into Indian society and makes friends. What I did like about the book was the freedom given to children.

    nothing more than a juvenalia

Was taken up by all the positive reviews and went for the book only to be massively disappointed. The plot is loose - there is too much happening too soon and the picture of the typical Indian bazaar reductive in its simplified generalization with the ubiquitous chaat and other cliches. And really don't understand the title. How much of the book is about the room on the roof ? I thought the introduction is more on the room on the roof. No guessing that it was written by a seventeen year old a...

    Novel MESMERISES its reader...!

An amaziingly written book that mesmerises reader into its pages and forces the reader to feel, picture and imagine the character's experience.

The book approches at an amazing pace making the urge to read ahead even stronger with every word you read, and before you know, you are regretting that you are already on the last page.

I, as the world is, am a big fan of Ruskin Bond, has a gift that he can create the scenario in minds of reader to as sharp as every leaf of grass.

    A book for all a...

    Well-written by 17year_Ruskin Bond

The sole reason why I bought this book was it was Ruskin Bond's first book. I was surprised to know that when he wrote that book he was just 17. and it won several awards including John Lewellyn Memorial prize. The beauty of Dehra dun is desrcibed well. Some scenes where he kisses a married woman was somewhat awkward but explained in a good manner that justifies it.
Almost first 70% of the book has really happened I guess but the rest is imaginary.
