Virginia Woolf's landmark inquiry into women's role in society

In A Room of One's Own, Virginia Woolf imagines that Shakespeare had a sister—a sister equal to Shakespeare in talent, and equal in genius, but whose legacy is radically different. This imaginary woman never writes a word and dies by her own hand, her genius unexpressed. If only she had found the means to create, argues Woolf, she would have reached the same heights as her immortal sibling. In this classic essay, she takes on the establishment, using her gift of language to dissect the world around her and give voice to those who are without. Her message is a simple one: women must have a fixed income and a room of their own in order to have the freedom to create.

A View of a Liberated Mind

Just sailed through Virginia Woolf’s delightful book: A Room of One’s Own with great awe and wonder.

The book originates from a lecture delivered by Virginia Woolf in Cambridge University in 1928. I was spellbound by the broad view and detailing of the impact of poverty as well as chastity on women’s creativity. It is generally acknowledged to have achieved the status of ‘one of the greatest feminist classics of the century’.

But I haven’t seen it that way. I was left amazed by the smooth f...

Women and Fiction or : An Essay On Feminism

Quality Check: please do not buy the UBS PUBLISHERS' DISTRIBUTORS edition. The pages are of very low quality. A few typos here and there. And the content page has got the number of chapters wrong. Albeit, the price is low, but I would still suggest the Penguin Modern Classics edition.

Virginia Woolf, was one of the greatest 20th century writers and modernists. She belongs to the era of the artists that experimented with 'stream of consciousness'. Some of her great works, included, The Voyag...

    Who is Judith Shakespeare?

A Room of One's Own is not merely an essay that can be termed both long and a feminist text :). What Woolf does is give an account of women's writing that gradaully moved on from fear and bitterness to comparative freedom.

Judith Shakespeare is her metaphor for all women who have the 'gift' of writing but are burnt on teh stake for they are 'women' and women are too delitcate 'to think or to write'. For a women to be able to write she needs a mind of her own un assailed with fear, griviances...

    I Love This!

Every nincompoop who thinks that women in the west have had it easy should definitely read this. Virginia Woolf's observation skills are just beyond this world. This book is not just for people studying feminism. It is for everyone who knows a woman.
That being said, this book is a Penguin's classic. So I obviously don't need to say much about its paper quality, binding and printing. It may seem a little expensive but it's not. Uh uh.
