  • Description
‘If Shakespeare had a sister as talented as he, would she have got the same opportunities to develop her skills?’ This was the burning question every feminist must have pondered over and agreed with while reading Virginia Woolf ’s extended essay A Room of One’s Own, which was first published in 1929. Woolf worked on the idea of how money and space serve as two very crucial factors in the independence of a woman, and especially one who wishes to write. In due course of her essay, she brings to the surface how women have undergone injustice in the face of biases and social constructs spanning across centuries.

    • Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) is recognized as one of the most innovative writers of the twentieth century. Perhaps best known as the author of Mrs Dalloway (1925) and To the Lighthouse (1927), she was also a prolific writer of essays, diaries, letters and biographies. Both in style and subject matter, Woolf ’s work captures the fastchanging world in which she was working, from transformation in gender roles, sexuality and class to technologies such as cars, airplanes and cinema. Influenced by seminal writers and artists of the period such as Marcel Proust, Igor Stravinsky and the post-impressionists, Woolf ’s work explores the key motifs of modernism, including the subconscious, time, perception, the city and the impact of war. Her ‘stream of consciousness’ technique enabled her to portray the interior lives of her characters and depict the montage-like imprint of memory.

A View of a Liberated Mind

Just sailed through Virginia Woolf’s delightful book: A Room of One’s Own with great awe and wonder.

The book originates from a lecture delivered by Virginia Woolf in Cambridge University in 1928. I was spellbound by the broad view and detailing of the impact of poverty as well as chastity on women’s creativity. It is generally acknowledged to have achieved the status of ‘one of the greatest feminist classics of the century’.

But I haven’t seen it that way. I was left amazed by the smooth f...

Women and Fiction or : An Essay On Feminism

Quality Check: please do not buy the UBS PUBLISHERS' DISTRIBUTORS edition. The pages are of very low quality. A few typos here and there. And the content page has got the number of chapters wrong. Albeit, the price is low, but I would still suggest the Penguin Modern Classics edition.

Virginia Woolf, was one of the greatest 20th century writers and modernists. She belongs to the era of the artists that experimented with 'stream of consciousness'. Some of her great works, included, The Voyag...

    Who is Judith Shakespeare?

A Room of One's Own is not merely an essay that can be termed both long and a feminist text :). What Woolf does is give an account of women's writing that gradaully moved on from fear and bitterness to comparative freedom.

Judith Shakespeare is her metaphor for all women who have the 'gift' of writing but are burnt on teh stake for they are 'women' and women are too delitcate 'to think or to write'. For a women to be able to write she needs a mind of her own un assailed with fear, griviances...

    I Love This!

Every nincompoop who thinks that women in the west have had it easy should definitely read this. Virginia Woolf's observation skills are just beyond this world. This book is not just for people studying feminism. It is for everyone who knows a woman.
That being said, this book is a Penguin's classic. So I obviously don't need to say much about its paper quality, binding and printing. It may seem a little expensive but it's not. Uh uh.
