This unique book commemorates the centenary of the Russian Revolution of 1917 which was an epochal event. The author takes the reader through the storms of a century when ideas of the Revolution changed the fabric of Russian society, and made dramatic impacts on the political, economic, and social structure of that country and when new ideas on literature and art were formulated. She eloquently narrates how the suffering, sacrifice and idealism of ordinary Russians contributed to remarkable achievements in education, science as well as victory in the Second World War. Achala Moulik vividly describes how the Soviet Union and the United States fought the Cold War “on the chess-board of continents” and how and why in this unique war Russia influenced the non-Western world. The author analyses the causes for the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the reasons for the new Russian resurgence.
