Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting, written by the screenwriting expert Syd Field, is a classic step-by-step guide on the art of script writing. It discusses how to write scripts thoroughly - from concept to finished script.

    Summary of the Book

Syd Field's Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting was one of the initial guides on writing screenplay for films, which was first published in the year 1979. It became an instant bestseller and has been considered the bible for aspiring screenwriters across the world ever since. Being a veteran screenwriter himself, Syd is unarguably acknowledged as a foremost specialist on the subject. In this newly revised and updated edition, he begins a fresh discussion on various concepts, along with the advanced inclinations of movie audiences. But he doesn't fail to keep the everlasting ethics of screenwriting together nonetheless. Syd has consulted some of the most renowned production companies from all over the globe, to understand what exactly are the essentialities in writing the best screenplay. In this book, he describes the significance of a good beginning, the importance of coherence in a script and the undisputable prerequisite for consistency between characters and story structure. Syd asserts that what is written in a script must easily translate into captivating visuals on the silver screen. He discusses every fundamental feature of screenwriting - from penning impressive dialogue to creating unforgettable characters. Other important aspects explained in this book are how to adapt literature for a movie and the serious concern of safeguarding legal safety of one’s original work. Syd brings up real-time examples from a few of the best movies of current times, to explain the formulae for successful screenwriting.

    Great for screenwriting

The book is superb for aspiring script writers, good process discussed in details plus lot of other useful information.
Although for those who are starting, i'll recommend to first read Dramatic writing by Lajos egri. A classic book to understand writing plays or movies. The book was recommended by Ritesh Batra(Writer/Director- lunchbox) as well as Mr. Kamlesh Pandey(writer of Rang de basanti, Tezaab & many more).

    Very Good

About the book it is as usual a great book. Easy to understand and good examples. But not satisfied with quality, papers are little dull and the book was little torn at the bottom when I received it. Also not satisfied with the delivery boy he was so rude and was in such a hurry that he couldn't wait 5 mins till I go and collect the parcel.
