  • Description

Published in the year 2011, Sei Samay (1-2) (Bengali) is a novel that throws light on the time in history when a new generation of Bengalis found themselves stuck between their new lifestyle and old traditions.

    Summary Of The Book

Sei Samay (1-2) (Bengali) documents the lives of the Singhas and the Mukherjees during one of the most critical times in Bengali history. These two families were neighbors, and extremely close to one another. Raja Rammohan Roy’s passing away was a defining moment that marked the end of an era, which left the new generation at strange crossroads.

The younger generation was equipped with good education in English, and had a fancy lifestyle as well. This made them replace their traditional mindsets with those from the West, and inspired them to shape their own destiny, having great ambitions. In a way, they could be considered brave for their attempt to change their way of thinking. On the other hand, they were struggling to cope with issues such as loyalty, self-doubt, and guilt for forsaking their forefathers’ traditions. The contrast between lifestyle and thoughts is portrayed through the lives of Ganga, and Nabin, and their generation. This book throws light on some of the crucial elements that were present in that specific time in Bengali history. It also provides key insight into the culture, art, and lives of those obsessed with alcohol.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar is an attractive young lad who worked towards bringing about social and religious reform on a large scale. He also played a key role in reviving the Bengali language, which was previously regarded inadequate, compared to the English language. Another character present in this book is Michael Madhusudan Dutt, who is a brilliant and dynamic personality.

A roller-coaster ride through mid-19th century Bengali society

In author's words, "The time-period of the novel is the protagonist" and truly so. The author chose a very unknown but utterly vibrant time in the history of Bengal to play upon. A time which has arguably witnessed the Bengali Renaissance, a time about which a little can be known and a lot has been derived, a time which was building the platform for the struggle for independence very slowly but surely, a time when Bengali literature was in its too early youth to hope to produce a novel like t...

    That's a classic!

A masterpiece. A page turner. Words fail me to describe this great work of a great literateur, let alone review it. Even when it was being serially published in Desh, it had left an indelible mark on my young mind, and has, over time, definitely shaped my conception of the legacy I have inherited by just being born and raised in our dear old Kolkata! Now relocated away, and reading it again this time, every page enriched me even more....I realise how knowing and understanding myself would hav...
