  • Description

Published in the year 2010, Serious Men is a novel that introduces the readers to Ayyan Mani, whose desire is to falsely propagate his son’s genius and his boss, Acharya.

    Summary Of The Book

Serious Men starts off with Ayyan Mani, who is a Tamil Dalit, residing in the Worli chawls of Mumbai. Ayyan works at the Institute of Theory and Research as a personal assistant. His responsibility is to answer private phone calls and read confidential letters. Acharya is the head astronomer at the institute, and spends a great deal of time researching the actual reason behind the Universe, exploring the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Ayyan’s only desire is to bring joy to the lives of his wife and their ten year old son. He then begins to spin the yarn that his son, who is partially deaf, is a genius, which captivates nearly the entire nation.

Acharya’s belief is that the Big Bang Theory is a proposition about the Universe’s existence by the West. He argues that the Vatican wanted to have some sort of plot that staged the creation of the Universe and the Big Bang Theory is the ideal one they chose. He goes on to explain his proposition, which is that the Universe could be a giant device that is capable of manufacturing pieces of life. Acharya gears himself towards launching a balloon into outer space, as he believes that these pieces may be floating around in the upper atmosphere.

The time comes when Acharya meets with a young astrobiologist named Oparna Goshmaulik, who poses a threat to Acharya’s reputation and the myth surrounding Ayyan’s son. While extremely good at her work, Oparna plays the role of a seductress, carrying on an illicit affair with Acharya, who slowly shifts back into his life as a married man. What follows next is a series of engrossing events that eventually bring about a positive change in the relationships between the characters in the book.

    Incisive humour

It has been long since I read a book that I so thoroughly enjoyed. For its sheer literary craft, its unlikely protagonist, unlikelier story, its deeply perceptive reading of Indian society and its deadpan humour, Serious Men deserves serious readership.

It might not sit well with you if you take caste affiliations seriously. But if you care for a good story, well told, I highly recommend this book.

Needless to say, super fast delivery and product delivered in excellent shape. The book is simply hilarious, sharp and sarcastic, something that comes to the author naturally. Great fast paced read and ample of sub-plots to keep you entertained.

Manage the first 100 pages, then it becomes an easy read

The book turns interesting only after first 100 pages. It starts off telling stories about two different people who are connected by the protagonist Ayyan Mani.
Manu Joseph lives up to his humor and comic style. He puts across the observations which we might have come across in our lives, in a very comic manner.
The book becomes captivating only after first 100 pages. It has its elements of surprise, which makes the read worthwhile.

    Half pathetic, Half funny

The content of the book is 326 pages. I found half of what was written in the first 200 pages useless, pathetic and out of context. Although the plot is good enough, some scenes have be exaggerated to an unneeded extent. The last 100 pages were good enough.

    Laughed away till the end

    Serious men is anything but...

The description of the economically not so well off indian and his struggles to fit into society might fell exaggerated but the author gives a good description of the struggles of a person born into such a situation and who has not made peace with who he is..

The protagonist Ayyan's charater is further enhanced by the rest of the cast who are poles opposite, or so Ayyan thinks.. The plot however climaxes too soon and fizzles out into oblivion..

    However, I...
