Description
Patriarchy asserts men are superior to women Feminism clarifies women and men are equal Queerness questions what constitutes male and female Queerness isn’t only modern, Western or sexual, says mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik. Take a close look at the vast written and oral traditions in Hinduism, some over two thousand years old, and you will find tales of: Shikhandi, who became a man to satisfy her wife Mahadeva, who became a woman to deliver a devotee’s child Chudala, who became a man to enlighten her husband Samavan, who became the wife of his male friend and many more . . . Playful and touching—and sometimes disturbing—these stories when compared with tales of the Mesopotamian Gilgamesh, the Greek Ganymede, the biblical Sodom or the Chinese ‘cut sleeve’ Emperor reveal the unique Indian way of making sense of queerness. Devdutt Pattanaik’s new book builds on profound ideas that our ancestors shared but which we have rarely inherited. This book has content for mature audiences. Discretion advised.

Queerness celebrated..!

Once again - Devdutt Pattanaik creates magic with his well researched stories from Indian mythology - that celebrate what is "queer" - the third sex - the ambiguity and differences that lie within this vast cosmos and how Hindu mythology has taught us to embrace that ambiguity and differences! I loved reading those stories - and they really are tales which no one ever tells us! However - i was disappointed that unlike other books by Mr. Pattanaik - where you get small nuggets of information a...

Good Read!

This is the 1st time I'am reading devdutt's work and I have to hand it over for his research and the way he had coined the tales. Poignant, witty and sharp, this book will definitely change our perspective about gay ism and lesbianism. I will recommend this book for a light read.

You cannot miss these popular stories revoving around gender metamorphosis

The author not only narrates the legends but offers extensive commentary to place the stories in proper context.
This book also inspired me to do research on the places, myths and people mentioned in the stories.
Devdutt portrays a cast of very real characters, some of whom weren't my favorite till I read this book.
What I like most is Devdutt Pattanaik's use of illustration to depict his ideas; the way my science teacher used diagrams.

Challenges status quo & conformity

This is a selection of tales on the theme of "queerness".(Probably)Well researched through ancient text like Vedas/Puranans.
It might be my non-alighned expectation wherein I expected to build it upto something, instead of reinforcement by multitude of anecdotes(monotonous at that).
At times, the 'questions' author asks are interesting & though provoking but again, gets repetitive after a while.
An easy read for a couple of days. Doesn't make a lasting impression of sorts.
The author is not f...

An awesome book from an awesome author

This is one of the best books I have read. This will spell bound the reader and the stories will revolve round you like as if the characters are all in front of you. The narration is awesome and the use of words is also very simple.

Must buy!

A wonderful book by a great writer. These tales shine light on some quite less known Indian myths. A must-read for anyone interested in expanding their understanding of ancient Indian social culture. Although a bit coloured by the writer's viewpoint, these stories are very relevant to today's world.

The book stands by its title!

Mr. Pattanaik is one of the best Indian authors and he never fails. Like all his other books, it is well researched and told in a manner that captures your attention. For me, the first person that comes in mind when I think of Mythology, it is him. It is not just Mythology for me but a step towards better understanding of spirituality. Thank you!

A different View of Querness and Sexuality through the Mythologist

Well, If you have had read DevDutt Patnaik, chances are that you already have read most of the stories condensed in this book. It not only tells story but author like in previous books also goes on to great length giving the rationale and his view of point in the context of the story. For this price I would not recommend this book, however if you get good deal around 100 to 130 you can buy and wont get disappointed.
