Description
Patriarchy asserts men are superior to womenFeminism clarifies women and men are equalQueerness questions what constitutes male and femaleQueerness isn’t only modern, Western or sexual, says mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik. Take a close look at the vast written and oral traditions in Hinduism, some over two thousand years old, and you will find tales of:Shikhandi, who became a man to satisfy her wifeMahadeva, who became a woman to deliver a devotee’s childChudala, who became a man to enlighten her husbandSamavan, who became the wife of his male friendand many more . . .Playful and touching—and sometimes disturbing—these stories when compared with tales of the Mesopotamian Gilgamesh, the Greek Ganymede, the biblical Sodom or the Chinese ‘cut sleeve’ Emperor reveal the unique Indian way of making sense of queerness. Devdutt Pattanaik’s new book builds on profound ideas that our ancestors shared but which we have rarely inherited. This book has content for mature audiences. Discretion advised.

Could have been a lot better

Devdutt Pattnaik is one of the contemporary Indian writers that I admire for his immense knowledge, thorough research and his objectivity, so when I picked up this book I was expecting a lot out of it. However, the stories are very concise and do not offer much context.
Still this anthology is a must-read for anyone who is interested in Hindu Mythology, but knowing the writer's caliber and the opportunity this collection has provided, I'm a tad bit disappointed at the end of the book.

Shikhandi is looking at epics in a queer light

Shikhandi is a good reading indeed! It is looking at the epics and mythologies in an entirely new point of view as far as the novice is concerned.
As many masters who teach Vedanta say, the epics are a work of fiction probably based on folklores; or are the folklores based on the epics as we know them from the Sanskrit authors? As we know, Sanskrit means refined. Hence, in all probabilities, the author is right in saying that the folklores came first. Probably, the divine song of Krishna was...

A good read but....

A good read, but if you have already read 'the pregnant king' by the same author and his other publications, there are only a few new facts to be learnt. Recommended for those people who have not yet read the author's more brilliant past publications.

Devdutt patnaik is one of the best authors india has...hatsoff to him for having writing a book for the entire society of other sex...
I wanted to read this book to know more about the character of shikandi. .as it was by Devdutt I blindly bought the book
But to my disappointment this book had only one chapter on shikandi., which I had already read in Jaya
But ironically I liked the other stories..n the way Devdutt wants them to be accepted in the society.
It really makes one think..,

It was really surprising to know that so many gods who are very near to us are all having queerness is in their nature. Surprising that we have forgotten to appreciate the queerness all around us. After reading this novel nobody what diet to treat a queer person with contempt. May god give you all of us the strength to treat all nature as god's gift. The author has once again done human service to humanity buy educating all pf us. thanks once again
