Description
Bihar’s Sikki folk art traces its origin to the Vedic period. The Sikki Grass craft has been existing for hundreds of years and is made from a special kind of grass known as sikki found in Bihar. This art is protected under the Geographic Indication Act 1999 of Government of India, and was registered by the Controller General of Patents Designs. Using Sikki grass was an integral part of living heritage of women of Mithila region of Bihar. The art subsequently came to be known as Sikka Shilp (Craft). This is one of the most popular forms of handicrafts of Bihar. The fact that artifacts made of sikki grass are eco-friendly is adding to their popularity in global markets. Sikki Grass is characterized by its wonderful beautiful golden colour, so it is also called as Golden Grass Sikki Art has got a new lease of life in recent days as artisans are not only contemporising the designs but also the art form itself.
