  • Description

Siddhartha is an allegorical novel written by the Nobel Laureate, Hermann Hesse. It deals with the spiritual journey of an Indian boy called Siddhartha during the time of the Buddha.

    Summary of the Book

This title was originally written in German, in a simple, yet powerful and lyrical style. It was first published in the year 1922 after Hesse had spent some time in India in the 1910s. The story revolves around a young Indian man who leaves his home and family in search for meaning and truth. The spiritual quest takes him from the austerities of renunciation to the profligacy of prosperity. It makes him experience a wide range of human experiences - from hunger and want to passion, pleasure, pain, greed, yearning, boredom, love, despair and hope. The journey ultimately leads him to the river, where he gains peace and eventually wisdom.

    About Hermann Hesse

Hermann Hesse was a German-born Swiss poet and author, best known for writing the novels Steppenwolf, Siddhartha (the current title), and The Glass Bead Game. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. His themes focus on man's struggle to break away from the rigid structures of civilisation and follow his essential and inner spirit. For this, Hesse became a literary cult figure.

    • Hermann Hesse (1877 -1962) was one of the great literary figures of the twentieth century. Born in Calw to a Protestant family, he rebelled against the classical education that he received in Swabian monastery schools. Hesse began working as a locksmith and a bookseller, and later took to writing as a profession. Settled in Switzerland, he travelled extensively, including India. Politically, Hesse was opposed to German militarism, for which he was condemed by the Nazi government. In recognition of his contribution to literature, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1946. His other classic works include Der Steppenwolf and The Glass Bead Game.

Highly Recommended for everyone with mind, soul and heart

At some point or the other, We have all asked ourselves the fundamental question, ''How do we find lasting peace? Why we suffer the way we do and is there a way out for cessation of suffering?''

All the religions of the world have explored the answer to the question in their own unique styles. Some have tried to answer it from within and some from without. As Hesse intelligently points out that we often try to simplify the question for finding the answer to it while within and without are o...

    Experience can't be sold

The book says that, being a disciple or following some great teacher's can't help us to attention enlightenment. It has to be done on our own. Since each and every person are unique, no teaching will help in spiritual enlightenment. Teaching's can just help us to lead a better life.

I think, this book would be an eye opener, for people who are looking for spiritual enlightenment.

    Good Story, Important Message

Hermann Hesse certainly knows a thing or two about spirituality and self discovery. He blends the two seemingly interlaced topics into an equally interlaced tale of confusion and clarity with his simplistic writing accessible to anyone with basic reading abilities in the language (English).

Siddhartha, the main protagonist, is quite clear about what he wants but comes across as someone perpetually confused about how he can attain that what he wants. He is a refreshing character who does not ...

Enlightment & Inspiration takes the toll

Though the first chapter "The Brahmin's Son" (of Part one) will lead you like written with dictionary referenced wordings.......but as you go on reading......it's a real piece of enlightment and inspiration (altogether)........I won't call it beautifully written......but written in such an arranged manner......that you real one paragraph within 2 mins and think about it (referencing with your personal life and thoughts) the other five minutes.......deserves being the bestseller......people 'i...
