I've held this book before. Felt it's heft. And though it is familiar to me, I can feel a fell wind begin to blow. For this is the beginning. The very beginning of it all. Where Sauron is, but a middling side kick. Where the Valar and the Maiar fall to the clarion call of battle against the darkest shadow of them all. Melkor stirs from Utumno and all the lands are held in thrall. But Arda is not lost yet. The Dwarfs and Elves are made and the flame of life and light flows through their veins....

If you are looking for the light-heartedness of the Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings, turn your head away from this. This book is EXTREMELY heavy. It is the history of the myths that dominate Arda (Middle-Earth). It has very difficult, archaic language. So, be warned.

This book amazed me by exposing Tolkien's imagination.
Admittedly the first few chapters are a little hard to stick to, but once you've crossed them, Tolkien will have you spell bound by the power of his imagination and by how much thought he has put into the making and history of his imaginary world.

If you have read and loved the Lord of the Rings, this book is a strong recommendations.

I am a big Tolkien fan and I feel that the Silmarillion is the finest of his works.

The story is not a conventional narrative but a collection of mythical tales interwoven around the fate of one household of elves and the legendary Silmaril jewels.
