Description

Social Problems In India discusses the various social issues that affect the country, along with their causes.

Summary Of The Book

Every society has its own problems. Problems arise due to many reasons. They are symptoms indicative of underlying causes that need to be focused on and resolved, in order to make the problems go away.

Social Problems In India thoroughly discusses the various problems in the Indian society, along with the causes. The book covers the issues in 17 chapters, providing focused coverage of each particular issue in separate chapters.

The first chapter discusses concepts and approaches in social problems. From the second chapter onwards, the author focuses on particular issues like Poverty, Population Explosion, Unemployment, Communal Violence, Violence Against Women, Child Abuse and Child Labour, and Urbanization. Social Problems In India also covers Crime and Criminals, Caste System, Youth Unrest, Juvenile Delinquency, Drug Abuse, Alcoholism, Black Money, and Terrorism. Each issue and related problems are discussed in detail, the causes and effects thoroughly analyzed.
The author discusses the problem, the underlying reasons, the scope of each issue and the possible ways to counter it. He believes that a fresh approach is needed for the current times. This edition of Social Problems In India has been revised to include more material on topics like terrorism, crime against women, child abuse and communal violence. It also contains new sections on AIDS, Corruption and Bonded Labour.

Providing critical analysis of problems with a sociological perspective, and theoretical explanations for academic study, this book is useful not just for students, but also for planners and policy makers.

NOT UPDATED AFTER 1997. DO NOT BUY

Its a 2013 reprint not revised. The latest coverage is up to 1997. although it deals with a wide range of aspects very well demarcated, there is no use since it misses the contemporary issues and almost every part of those discussed desperately need to be updated. nothing more than the index part is probably useful for a potential reader. waiting for an updated and revised edition.

Not updated

This books deals with the social aspects of the common issues. It gives a brief overview of other perspectives but largely you will be left wanting. For example, on the issue of " Crime against women", it gives a pretty in-depth analysis of the social root, causes, classification, measures etc but it failed to address the law and policies adopted by the government. Further, the book is not updated. It mentioned the Criminal Law amendment,2013 but it failed to point out even the main features ...

Good Book for UPSC

I think this is a very good to cover the various social issues present in India. Especially if one is running short of time. The book familiarizes one with the various social issues present in India. It is must for those who want a book other than NCERT on this topic and rely on self study.

This book has to be complemented with the current events on various social issues. It will also help in providing fodder points for some interview questions and the essay.

I have not read the earlie...
