An interesting book even for those not fully familiar with the Carnatic style, which unlike its Northern counterpart, is soaked in Bhakthi and devotion to the creator and creations. A good addition to the body of knowledge and understanding of this great legacy that I consider is a part of ancient wisdom.

Vidwan TMK has brought in his class into this book.. Well constructed essays.. Amazing display of thought process.. A blend of in-depth knowledge (jnanam), passion, experience, research... One of the best works describing the aesthetics of carnatic music.. And TMK has done a splendid job by exploring various boundaries of culture, practices, rituals, gender, art forms, etc... A must read for any art lover.. I have always enjoyed his music and his writings and this book deserves a special note...

The content in the book is definitive, coming from one of the stalwarts in Carnatic music, a bible if I may say.
All aspects of Carnatic music are explained in detail. Must buy for anyone serious about this craft.

BUT, I found the language to be very convoluted, not lucid.
I use it primarily to fall asleep.

A good book. Throws new light on some aspects of Carnatic Music. In my personal view something more in depth could have been included to bring out the bombastic Melakartha system and the fact that even Carnatic Music is basically structured on musical phrases and the elaborate raga system based on the Melakartha-Janya etc., notions are a mere facade to build a theory of Carnatic Music.

TM krishna gives a vivid picture of karnatik music in this book. It traces the feel of Karnatik music, its history.
